"Probably my favourite in Portnoy's suite thingy"

yeah easily but the whole suite is just really dumb. i mean, it wasn't if the riffs weren't so goddamn recycled. glass prison and root of all evil are pretty much the only worthwhile songs in the suite

The first half of Repentance is one of their best ballads, certainly their best of the 00's

@Artuma. It's only recycled in The Shattered Fortress which is a shitty song anyway because it has no personality of its own. I quite enjoyed how they merged different parts from songs together, like the drumming pattern at the start of Root which reprises This Dying Soul.

i cringe every time i hear that breakdown part on this dying soul. also repentance is recycled all the way, just a different tone to it. and yeah, the shattered fortress has nothing original to it

The Shattered Fortress sounds like those awful 'mash up' songs you see on youtube

Shattered Fortress isn't perfect and has some annoying singing, but the guitar work is so good.

Besides all of it right? Well, the intro is ok i suppose. Ignoring the lyrics of Count, it's a damn good song, especially the acoustic section towards the end

the first half of count is just awful but the second half is amazing (except for the terrible lyrics)

It builds up nicely but that chorus ruins it so much

The lyrics and subject matter is so bewildering and misplaced I just can't get into it anymore. It's like "I thought you were gonna eat me" and then he says "no of course not, you can leave whenever you want" and Petrucci's like "oh ok cool." The End. It makes that overemotional cheesy ending with the singing and lyrics that much dumber and confusing, a slightly better version of the end of Illumination Theory. Tuscany is a good song though, I don't really mind the soundscape even if it's way too long

The final LaBrie note is so stupid when he draws it out and stuff.

"the riffs weren't so goddamn recycled"

Well it's a suite, it makes sense to have a reprise of melodies
