How clearly you can make out the words has a big impact. If you can easily hear some shit-tier lyrics it's much worse than not being able to discern what is being said. Like, Isis lyrics could literally be anything and I wouldn't be the wiser cause fuck if I can understand what the hell Turner is saying.

It's not just clean/harsh though, I've heard very detailed harsh vocals where I understand everything and very amorphous cleans where I can't figure out what the fuck is being said.

well fk i've listened to all isis hundreds of times and for some reason i was under the impression that the clean vocals were quite comprehensible on their last two, but re-listening now and they're not even slightly. Yeah Misery Signals - Contoller is the prime example of growled yet completely intelligible vox down to the last word. I'm not sure how much is deliberate vs natural vocal delivery.
