EXCUSE ME how have I never heard Deranged before if it's an old track???
The Joke is surprisingly passable considering I kinda phased out of these guys newer material ever since Ascension/Descension. Love the dissonant bright descending guitar bit. Breezy traditional Coheed sound.

The album it was released on was delisted, so you could pretty much only find it by actively searching for it on YT or something like that. Glad to see the band actually trying to preserve that history rather than toss it away

Should've been an OG and purchased it on iTunes back in 2011.

Have you listened to their first 2 albums? I see you don't have ratings for them but they're easily their best and most consistent.

I'm actually trying to work my way back through them. I've heard singles from them, but I definitely need to check them in full, especially IKSSE:3

IKS is a seminal record and my favorite of all time so I might be a little biased but Claudio's vocals are at his best there and the vocal layering is second to none. His range was all over the place back then where I feel like he just has one singing level now unless he's hitting a higher note.

It's one of my biggest "must-listen" backlog albums I keep meaning to clear out. I'm listening to YOTBR atm, so I think doing IKS is probably a good way to cleanse the palate

Not that YOTBR is bad, but it's definitely one of their weaker albums

YOTBR has a few highlights like Far but yeah, Chris wasn't a great fit for them as a drummer and Claudio's vocals weren't great because he was smoking a ton.

I think Chris's drumming works well on certain parts (Guns of Summer), but my big issue with the album is weird production choices, and it being wayyyy too long, even by Coheed standards. The back half especially seriously blends together

YOTBR is definitely a grower not a shower. It kinda came out with the cards stacked against it as they had just had their big finale to the Amory Wars and then went in a heavily electronic/industrial pop direction while having a drummer that didn't fit their needs. It's not surprising that the band was basically on the verge of ending around that time

That being said, it's aged pretty well. My big gripe is that I think the closing track feels kinda half-baked

I'm listening to the closer rn, and yeah, this one is definitely half-baked. It feels like Coheed trying to do their big ending suite thing without any idea of what to do for said suite

The closer was my biggest disappointment with the album given how great God Send Conspirator, The Light and the Glass (hey that's my username)/21:13, The Final Cut, and On the Brink are.

I expected a grand emotional sendoff and was just... that. Lol. I do like YOTBR though and think it works best as an album rather than individual tracks.

The best thing that came out of YOTBR was the hardcover novel that I blitzed through in a day.

Yeah, it's really close to being a good closer but they needed to have some sort of release or another movement or something. Instead it's just "IT'S OOOOOOOOVER IT'S ALLLLLL FALLLING APART" for minutes on end

Yeah not their best songwriting moment. Which is weird because some of their best songwriting moments are on Black Rainbow

I actually dig the closer on YOTBR, love the atmosphere on it. And the hook for some reason. Although I have a nostalgia for it I suppose.

I agree. It doesn't "do" a whole lot, but while the song construction is pretty basic it makes up for it with great tension and a darkness that hasn't really been present in Coheed since. It truly feels like a band's last song, Claudio's farewell to not just the concept but his fans. I feel like it's one of the most emotional songs on the whole album.

Pretty sure world of lines is the last song on that album. I have no idea what you guys are talking about

Far is goated though, One of those songs that pops in my head a few times a year, even if I haven't heard it

The tension build-up breaking when the Far solo starts is one of my favorite things Coheed has ever done. Beautiful song.

The Broken kicks ass too! Despite YOTBR's shortcomings it sure knows how to bring the drama. Vastly more-so than this album, asides from a couple of tracks towards the end.
