It's one of the 2019 releases I've returned to the most

There are some absolutely beautiful songs on this (hey ma, faith, Salem,...) but I feel like the shorter songs kinda feel underdeveloped. Just when I think some of the songs are going to come in it’s own the song ends, and it’s a shame. It still might grow on me though.

Agreed, it's a nice combination of the previous two albums while also sounding like its own thing.

I actually enjoy this album as opposed to 22, A Million. Bumped up.

I actually enjoy that the songs are fleeting and somewhat "structure-less" for lack of a better descriptor. kind of like ideas, feelings, life in general or whatnot they're not necessarily clear or unified. in any case, Bon Iver just knows how to pen the pretties so some of y'all are trippin' ^^.

personally i find that you can still capture that free-form cadence of feelings and thoughts without going into aimlessness. Structure can elevate and give the emotions you are trying to convey more depth and impact.
It's like the difference between a perfect 1:1 retelling of a dream and a story with "dream-logic", both can be loose and weird, but one is boring af and aimless and the other can be entertaining and fun.

I buy all of that rabid. I supose it boils to prefence. I like either my music to be very ridig, almost logic or the exact opposite. I think that the perceived aimlessness on here is Bon Iver's major appeal. It's all very in-the-moment like a campfire song or a dream.

It seems like the ~aimlessness~ was purposefully done, though. That's kind of how it feels when you're seeking meaning. You wonder until you land... or vanish. That's why I'm so impressed with this. If he's consciously portraying that through his music... well, that's pretty amazing. Who knows, I could be chasing the wind here.

This might have clicked with me this night. Was driving home on the highway from a night out at 5am and listened to this again. Fitted the mood so well, even the shorter songs. I love when something finally clicks. This just did.

this was super disappointing for me. while there were hints of great melodies and instrumentals in there, the songs just meandered and flowed into one. i really miss the days of his s/t, i think he's trying way too hard with this and his last album (which at least had some great songs on it)

Going to see him live next week, looks like they are playing this entire record. Probably going to be pissed.

Well the record only lasts just over 30 minutes, so if they play over 2 hours there’s enough time for a lot of other songs as well.

Sh'Diah is still pure gold. One of the more serene tracks he's done I'd say

Digging this more and more, definitely a grower
