incredibly generic and formulaic. the vocal melodies are on the same level like Tonight's The Night, more or less. Structured, mildly memorable, but kinda ordinary and generic at the same time. The riffs, arrangements, instrumentation, though, are fucking average. Even more bland than Tonight's The Night. Nah
Also. Cortez is overrated, imo. Neil has had way better solos (and songs) in his career.

Great album! I love Cortez the Killer thou it clearly shows why Neil is musician and not historian...
Very nice, descriptive review with great contextualization!

Has anyone jammed "Dume" from the new boxset? It's a reworking of Zuma including 8 unreleased tracks from the sessions, including several songs from Rust Never Sleeps that originated here. Only bummer is that it's missing the confirmed Zuma version of "Sedan Delivery", but that's apparently coming "later". Powerfinger is already one of my absolute favorite Young tracks, but the version from Dume is even more enjoyable to me.

Been digging into this one this week and yup, it’s another winner. I especially enjoy the guitar playing and tones on this one. I already knew Cortez and obviously that’s the best, but most of the rest is nothing to scoff at either. This album in particular among Neil’s 70s stuff, especially the poppier stuff, feels like a direct precursor to a lot of 90s alt-country and country rock. The two long songs also feel incredibly influential on slowcore. Only real drawback here is some of the lyrics/lyrical themes in general are kind of weak and the two epics don’t really fit with the rest.
However despite how great and influential the loud electric stuff here is I think my second fave behind Cortez is “Pardon My Heart.” Gorgeous melodies and acoustic playing and that quiet more textured electric guitar that comes in as a solo midway through and plays throughout the second half is really wonderful.
