Loooool I accidentally had it set to shuffle for my first play through so I confused Boots Mine Gold with Cowboys in Georgia. Reflections, Boots Mine Gold, Tired of Feeling Good, and Crystal Heart are my favourites after a second play

Definitely an earthier, more conventional sidestep from Starmaker, but I honestly don’t mind too much. Starmaker was likely my favourite album of 2020, but I’m a sucker for this sort of country in general, and there are some real CSNY vibes in some of the vocal harmonies and guitars that I’m enjoying.

Gyro I wonder how many of your worst takes are victim to your lack of reading comprehension etc? Like all this time you’ve been listening to shit on shuffle, time to go back and redact all other hot takes imo

'Cowboys in Georgia' is maybe the 'mainstream country' filter on this one

If you listen to any vaguely mainstream country it really doesn't sound that offensive :/

Still find it strange 'Broken Token' is my least favourite and that was the lead single

What’s wrong with Cowboys? That’s one of my favorites.

I think it veers towards sounding like generic country. In general that stereotypical country twangy-ness is what put me off the genre for so long. Some artists lay into it heavier than others and it's one thing that's bothered me about Honey Harper's music at times, but the production and songwriting is just so damn good most of the time. It's probably why I tend to warm up to tracks like "Reflections" before others - the ones that sound decidedly less like country than others

But like Sowing, I keep warming up to the genre more and more over the years

Fair enough I guess, as Doof points out I guess I’m more into that kind of thing than most here but that doesn’t stand out as a particularly generic country song to me (it’s definitely as alt-country as the rest of this). In particularly I find the guitar tone (and the solo) on that one really gorgeous.

Cowboys is a really good track, it’s just steeped in genre conventions a lot more than Harper’s previous album. The twang is an inherent part of the form; it’s a feature, not a bug, and given how hard it is to make a living off this shit I don’t exactly blame Harper for leaning into it with a wink and nod. It’s still quite far from Mainstream Country though; it actually reminds me of 90s alt country more than anything.

Spinning the album for a third time rn and "atrocious" was an overreaction for sure but it's stil very meh and I find the "Ain't no cowboys in Georgia, after all" grating. Hard To Make A Living is really standing out to me more now. Same with Heaven Knows.

After nearly 3 spins I'm actually starting to wonder how this isn't a Sowing 5

I really don't understand how Starmaker as seen as superior to this album. I mean, it's been a while since I've heard it, but I just played the first 5 tracks again and it doesn't sound like a huge upgrade to me

Yeah, I’m coming around to a similar perspective - I do think this one is a bit less “magical”/transportive than that one was, but at the core of the songwriting the quality is pretty similar overall.

Yeah but whenever you say something it's literally the opposite and this seems even more ear-wormy than Starmaker and has some gorgeous instrumentation and Starmaker is great but it almost feels a bit stripped back at times compared to this.

It feels like it has been an eternity since Starmaker came out. Can’t believe it was 2020. Finally.

I have to be honest, I spun the first 4-5 tracks yesterday while cooking and did not see/hear anything of what made Starmaker that special, was that it was quite unconvential despite taking from a familiar playbook.

This one, it seems like what I would expect a modern Country disc to sound like, which is not what I want to listen.
