Good songs, but sometimes weak lyrics. Not sure what to rate yet, but enjoying the album

This band has gone downhill so fast. I haven't cared much for them since Swoon

Pretty much agree with everything you've said Sowing.
Yesterday I revisited Carnavas, Swoon, Better Nature, and Neck of the Woods; there is a glaring difference in quality for me with their later work. It sounds like the band is having more fun with what they're making, and the sound has more room to breath.
I was harsh on Better Nature when it first came out, but damn I love every track on that album, It feels incredibly organic. The lightweight nature of it let's me get lost in what is going on just like Physical Thrills; it brings you on a journey with so many little things going on in the background.
Swoon has a huge punch in the first half, even though I find myself skipping "There's No Secrets This Year" but damn it loses so much steam after Panic Switch and I found myself bored like my first visit with the album all those years ago. Carnavas holds some classic tracks respectfully, but it gets very samey in sound.
Neck of the Woods starts off very slow (Even though I love Skin Graph as well) but does pick up steam later on. I find myself skipping a lot of tracks on there just to get to the last 4 tracks.
Finally, Widow's Weeds is very one dimensional. Freakazoid and Songbirds are the only tracks I really enjoy here, with everything else sounding very uninspired.
Need some time before I rank them all :D.

Album Rating: 4.0
The very good: #1 Carnavas, #2 Neck of the Woods
The good: #3 Physical Thrills, #4 Pikul EP
The pretty enjoyable if you're in the mood to : #5 Seasick EP #6 Better Nature #7 Swoon
The nopes: #8 Widow's Weeds, #9 Let it Decay EP
I guess :p
EDIT: My personal favourite is NOTW (I usually listen to it with a different track order + I shove the Cannibal single on it). But I think Carnavas is a stronger offering musically, still sounds fresh.

this isn't really doing it for me. a lot of phoned in vocal performances from brian, and the flow feels really disjointed. hidden moon sounds like a foals b-side. i like the nikki tracks though, i think they could make a very serviceable pop album.

I really liked Better Nature and Widow's Weeds but pretty whelmed with this release unfortunately. Alone on a Hill is gorgeous and Hereafter, System Error, and Empty Nest are solid. I think I like We Won't Come Out? I like how you described the album as introverted as I think that's a great description - just not what I was hoping from the latest SSPU.

This really feels more creatively on fire than anything since they established their initial sound

After two listens, this feels about on par with Widow's Weeds in quality for me. We'll see if it grows though, feels like it might.

There's No Secrets This Year from Swoon is also a dope opener.
As somewhat of a Widow's Weeds apologist, this one is more complex and varied and layered. Definitely the better album experience. I've only listened twice though, so no rating yet.

I sort of wish Stillness would explode into some vintage SSPU fuzz at the end, but I also appreciate the restraint.

Melatonin was always like a "this is a really cool opener but not really a highlight"
and now it's maybe my favorite song by them

My favorites off the new album in order, also scratching the tempo tracks:
System Error
Hidden Moon
We Won't Come Out
Scared Together
Empty Nest
Stillness
Sticks and Stones
Hereafter
Stay Down
Alone on a Hill
Quicksand
I revisited Widow's Weeds, and it is the only SSPU's album that does absolutely nothing for me. With the exception of Freakazoid and Songbirds.
As for their best opener, it has to be Cradle for me. Most of their openers always felt out of place for me as far as track order goes. However, Skin Graph is a huge song, and someone said it in here that they listen to Neck of the Woods in a different order... And damn after rearranging the tracks, I put it back up in the top for me.
Album rankings right now are:
Physical Thrills
Neck of the Woods
Better Nature
Carnavas
Swoon
Widow's Weeds
For favorite songs in no particular order:
Tapedeck
Nightlight
Cradle
Future Foe Scenarios
Dream At Tempo 119
Seasick
Kissing Families
Comeback Kid
Mean Spirits
Skin Graph
Simmer
Out of Breath
System Error
Hidden Moon
We Won't Come Out
The Royal We
Panic Switch
Freakazoid
Broken Bottles
