It's definetly an enjoyable listen Not sure how to rate this yet tbh, maybe I should listen to the other albums first, because I can see the context changing my opinion on this

review is my thoughts exactly. this still has the essential characteristics of Saor (the melodies, structures, and instruments that evoke sagas of Highland heritage and glorious battle) but it's presented in a more immediate way. I'm still finding new life in Aura hundreds of listens later, while I feel like I know this one pretty well after two weeks -- which is a double-edged sword, of course. it's easy to play in the car and friends will go "oh, cool!" instead of waiting for a long overture to evolve into the song proper, but it sacrifices the immense replay value of albums that grow and reveal their secrets over time.
without getting too far removed from the actual compositions, this is how I imagine a "marketable" version of Saor, for better or for worse. worse, if you love their early albums.

Forgotten Paths seemed more ‘immediate’ but some of those melodies were damn killer… idk just not feeling this one

yeah I hear it in the title track, including the Neige feature. I agree it's more a continuation of a trend than a huge departure, as the review suggests.

I wouldn't mind if this sound went full old school, channeling a sort of Darkthrone/Scottish hills vibescape - but this is sat too far in the middle; watering the past albums down.

Personally I really-really liked this one. Easy listening + upbeat folky black metal? Yes!! "The Ancient Ones" is like a Null song from last year... and I love it.

Idk, really enjoyed this, sounds great too. The last one was better though.
Lack of female vocals feature is a big mistake, mr. Marshall.
