I loved Color Theory but this is just phenomenal, maybe AOTY so far

This is not as good as Color Theory, but it's still great.

"It’s a heartbreaking conclusion and perhaps the most vulnerable Soccer Mommy has ever sounded."

Still is an immense closer but I don't agree with this. Have you read the lyrics to Gray Light? I honestly don't think people gave Color Theory deep enough of a listen, it's a heartbreaking introspection on illness, both physical and mental

"Have you read the lyrics to Gray Light?"

you caught me ;) I have Color Theory rated a 3.9 so I definitely didn't dislike it... but I'll have to revisit that song

What does a guy have to do to get a name-drop in an Atari review?

Gotcha ;) the color theory rant wasn't aimed specifically at you, I'm just generally butthurt about its score on here as it was one of my fave albums of 2020 lol. Great review btw!

color theory had about 3 tracks I loved (circle the drain, yellow, bloodstream) and a bunch that I found super unmemorable

found it really overproduced

may give it a revisit on the back of this as well though

I wish you talked about the OPN connection, the whole promo cycle for this record emphasized that it's produced by Lopatin. I personally wish she did more with the link-up: "Unholy Affliction" and "Darkness Forever" benefit from his touch, but most of the album defaults to NPR indie.

Didn’t get much Lopatin influence

Very listenable but I’m not so sure about how good. ‘Twixt this and Color Theory I’m thinking she may be more of a singles artist for me.

Actually I may be eating my words already because “Don’t Ask Me” and “Darkness Forever” do kinda rip while “Shotgun” is cool but kinda overhyped I’m thinking (great bass line and solid chorus but idk it’s not mindblowing by any means) and “newdemo” is kind of a nothing song (but hm with that title maybe it’s intentionally so??).

Review is accurate. This is her first album to hit for me as a whole and demands attention, rather than being pleasant background noise. Pretty stunning stuff

just stay on my good side and it could happen, haha. also glad to hear this may be growing on you slightly.

"I wish you talked about the OPN connection"

I didn't really pay attention to the promo stuff as I wasn't actually planning on reviewing this until it dropped. But sadly I'm not really familiar with OPN so might have to change that ;) I could definitely tell there was something special in the production tho. I touched on this briefly at the end of para 3 but maybe I'll expand on that just a tad later if Lopatin is responsible

Don’t Ask Me is an sleeper hit right now imo, there’s some deep cuts on this one. And Still is such a great closer arguably my favorite song on here

Yeah “Don’t Ask Me” seems like it should have been an obvious single but maybe that was too similar to “Bones” and “Shotgun” and she (or her label, idk how much control artists have over these things these days) wanted to showcase the variety more? Still feel she could’ve chosen something better than “newdemo” which might be the weakest cut here.
