Animal Joy was a really pleasant album with a thunderous presence about it; I loved that record a great deal. This one is the opposite but equally pleasant-- really quiet, serene, but super lush instrumentation-- don't confuse serene for boring because if you strap on some nice headphones there's a lot to hear and it's executed really well.

Exactly; Animal Joy was pretty immediate, and I liked it (not quite as much as you), but this one just seems so much more atmospherically rich than anything they've done in a long time. I'd also very highly recommend Rook if you haven't heard it -- that one was always my longtime favorite Shearwater. In fact, this new album is really the first one to challenge its top status for me.

Maybe that's the only reason this sounded good in the first place ;-)

Great review, Sowing. This sounds right up alley. That said, anything that you like I've found that I tend to like a lot as well.

Haven't listened to Shearwater before, oddly enough, although I liked his collaboration with Emily Cross (I think that's her name?) in Loma.

Thanks both of you. SublimeSound, this is very much a grower and I think it does better in certain settings (i.e. night, isolation) than it does casual ones, but if you like Shearwater then perhaps give either Rook or The Golden Archipelago a listen as well -- they both seem to be the most universally appreciated of all the band's works. This one I could foresee toppling both of the aforementioned as my top Shearwater album, but that's just me personally.

Give it more time JonathanoftheWell. I swear of all the things that I claim need a chance to grow and be experienced in the right setting, this one really does. I was pretty lukewarm on it my first spin, liked it my second, loved it my third. Now it's all I'm listening to.

Every day a new song has emerged to floor me. Today it's Aqaba.

Three days ago I might have been able to agree or disagree with that but now I have no clue. They all play such a cool and uniquely integral role in how the album unfolds. Sometimes I get carried away with hoping an album catches on here, but I sort of like that this is a bit off the radar. Somehow makes it more special to me.

This definitely reminds me of Noonday Dream as well. They both seem inspired by Talk Talk & John Martyn. Also the string work here is really nice.

Glad you reviewed this Sow, had to be you. The album is a beauty. Not my favorite of them but a very interesting approach. It sounds like his other project (Loma) has bled into this band finally.

Yeah this is pretty unlike the usual stuff I review, much more subtle and atmospheric for certain, but I'm glad it's interesting to some of ya'll. I keep tumbling deeper down the rabbit hole with it, I'm sure it'll be one of my top albums this year.

This album live would be interesting. It's such an unhurried but rich and layered album; I could see it doing well in small venues as something of a spiritual experience but it doesn't have the uptempo moments to pack a stadium.
