"The production is fantastic. At you listening to a factory copy?"

it isn't something that overtly obvious, as in it sounds faulty. I feel the production on this is the same blunder Once More's production had. It all sounds very flat and somewhat lifeless, nothing seems to pop out. The songwriting seems really solid on the first two spins, but the production really bugs me haha

Best since Crack The Skye? More like their best album period, because it is.

Seems like many are truly forgetting the uniqueness of albums like Leviathan or Blood Mountain. I hate to be that guy because the new album is good, and well, new and all, but there's a reason why Mastodon was big in the first place, and that's because there wasn't anything like Leviathan, or Remission, or BM, or even CtS when those albums came out, and frankly they *still* are some of the most unique metal records to date, decades later. Really, does anything off the new album *really* make you feel the same as the first time you heard Hearts Alive as a closer on Leviathan? Or the insane twisted fables of metal historicity that is the entirety of Blood Mountain? With time, it is shown that those records can't be duplicated, and rightfully without much interest from the band itself. But the new record can be good without the crazy hyperbole. It's a great progression and it's where most people wanted them to go after Cold Dark Place so it's a win win for most. I'm surprised people find it surprising lol. But it just doesn't touch the lightning in the bottle that was in their earlier albums. And I wouldn't expect it to, but this is basically exactly what I would have expected by this point in their career, and the same just can't be said about their earlier albums because they almost guaranteed something would surprise even the most skeptical listener with something spectacular.

Yeah idk most of this kinda has the EoS problem of just sounding very Mastodon-by-numbers (here's the sludgy Troy Sanders verse! Here's the Brann Dailor stoner rock chorus! Here's the Brent Hinds sorta-psychedelic solo!)

Say what you want about the the Hunter, it didn't sound anything like the albums that came before. I could have guesstimated 3/4ths of this album's sound and saved myself an hour of listening time

I was thinking that yesterday about The Hunter too actually, because of all of their records, Once More has waned an excessive amount. The Hunter though, while I probably don't jam it any more than Sun, it does have that novelty of being the first iteration of like, "normal" sounding tunes by the band and it's not a failure, one either likes the concept or not. Like it could have been a lot worse but I get that it's certainly not for everyone, and it isn't always my cup of tea. I was just thinking, that that could be one of their more honest feeling records for them, since it's kind of the first time they did something that didn't have to have this grandiose backdrop and if they wanted to get out of the direction they were heading towards with Skye, it really does make sense, and I mean, it isn't/wasn't a totally tasteless endeavor. There was a ton of new stuff that came from them on that album but it did so because it had to be simple. The Hunter is still pretty low for me in rating and ranking because it just doesn't have much relistenability nowadays but I do respect it for why it's there.

I feel like an idiot and I have to change my rating now. The production quality problems I was experiencing were the Dolby Atmos settings in Apple Music which is my streaming provider.

100% agreed. My first listen of this was Friday night, driving in a cold sideways rain that was blowing the autumn leaves all across my windshield. I was on all these creepy country back roads, and I was purposely taking roundabout ways to get home so that I could stretch out the listening experience. Absolutely unreal atmosphere to first hear this, but even without taking that kind of subjective stuff into account this is still basically a perfect album. I've listened to it three times now, and I'm convinced that there isn't so much as one mediocre song. This thing just keeps coming at you harder and harder; every track packs its own unique and unforgettable punch. I seriously couldn't even begin to pick a favorite, they're all phenomenal.

Ha, that’s hilarious…I did something similar, just drove around on dark neighborhood roads after leaving work Friday night cranking this. Checking out Halloween decorations etc. Good shit man.

That is completely possible, I won’t disagree with you — but it remains to be seen, need to give it more respond and time to percolate. It’s definitely a contender man, I feel comfortable calling this their masterpiece for sure.

More Than I Could Chew rivals Roots Remain as being the best here (RR obv best on EoS).

Picked up this album on CD because I love this band. Anybody else diving into it as a double album?

I’ve spent the last two days with the first disc, haven’t even touched the second one yet. Great album so far.
