"I think because I can imagine the pain so vividly thanks to his songwriting."
This is why I love him so much - He calls his music "Dirt Emo" and I think that's so incredibly fitting

Guess I have to hear this. I liked Dying Star but found it overlong but this at a slim 30 minutes should be good.

Yeah Boney, I much prefer this one to Dying Star, again largely because of the length. He also takes more risks on this one

gonna have to echo everyone's thoughts on that closing track. that piano melody is both haunting and beautiful. simple but SO effective

Dying Star is definitely a step down from this, it's a bit more polished (which in this case I don't mean as a good thing), it's really long, and nothing hits as hard as the emotionally devastating peaks on here (such as Poison and the closer). This is definitely the place to start if you are looking to get into Ruston's stuff, and he has a new LP coming out 8/28 that I'm pretty hyped about too.

Love your focus on Poison.

Thanks, it's my favorite song of his. I feel like the entire album rotates around it as the center.

For sure. I honestly forgot a lot of the songs on this album, but Black Magic, Poison and (Downstairs) make it so so great. Love that little poem interlude, too.
I think my favourite thing about him is how overly earnest he is. Have you heard Asshole? Very, very good.

Overly earnest is a good way of putting it. It sounds like it'd be a bad thing but I think it's refreshing. I have not heard Asshole. Doesn't sound like it'd be in this arena of touchy feely country rock haha but if it packs an emotional punch you know I'll be in.

Ok yeah, Asshole was fantastic. I love that he’s wearing a Slayer shirt in the album art for that track, haha

Ok guess I need to get on it then

It reminds me of someone else, maybe Radical Face? Doesn’t sound like it would belong on this album but a playful and quality indie folk track nonetheless

can't wait for his new one but i feel like it's gonna be his most commercial sounding
excellent songwriter

Agreed, feels like it might take a hard turn towards the mainstream. Withholding judgment until I listen to the entire album though, Ruston has yet to let me down.

checking his other stuff out now. already in love with this guy

Actually think the last few singles are by far some of his best songs. At the very least it feels like this new album will be his most consistent. Dying Star was good and had some amazing songs but a lot of it was also fairly forgettable I thought, especially some of the poppier stuff -- don't think that's necessarily his strongsuit.

slex, sowing, and colton approved?
