It's honestly more lo-fi folk than country. You don't have to yee haw, maybe just yee.
|

Well I've been wanting to get into non-cringe country since Casualties of Cool, so I'll give it a spin

A lot of great country/Americana has come out in 2020. If you're interested in getting into the genre check the new Honey Harper, Jason Isbell, Katie Pruitt, and Waxahatchee. Also check Sturgill Simpson's A Sailor's Guide to Earth from 2016 if you haven't, that's what got me into modern country after hating country my entire life.

Already checked out A Sailor's Guide to Earth but was a little disappointed that the only song that stuck with me was All Around You. Turns out the best thing about that country album was basically a soulful R&B song.
Country is such a difficult genre. Has so much potential but I find it's stubborn to do new, interesting things. Americana is pretty inventive but never really gotten into that for some reason

Hmm. Check Honey Harper - it's sorta like lush, dreamy country folk. You might dig that if the standard country tropes are giving you issues.

Awesome to see a 3rd rating, finally. :-) This and the new Thomas Azier have both been pushing that big ol' 5 for me lately, I should just cave and do it. Especially here - there's so many moments that practically make me say aww out loud, but not ironically - it's legitimately that sincere. Every song here seems to move me, but right now I'm stuck on 'Mine': "When you are mine, no I ain't so angry / When you are mine, this world don't owe me a thing / Since you are mine, oh the lord can take me / And I could die right now with no qualms or questioning."

Jfc you two, get a room ;-)
ColeT, it's very different in terms of country. Honey Harper is produced to the stars and then some, this is barely even produced at all lol. Honey Harper is more about finesse and aesthetic, whereas this is all bare bones and lyrics. The main thing they have in common is that neither is the overly twangy, cringey country - they're both more of a folk/singer-songwriter type. In Zach Bryan (which I agree is the most country name ever), you'll get stripped down acoustics - almost like Jason Isbell singing Elliott Smith songs. Both artists/albums are incredible in their own right.

Oh wow, dropping the five! I'll have to return to this one. I think a big part of the Zach Bryan experience is your first experience with him. For being so simple, he's incredibly unique. I'll always remember that first listen of Deann, and so Elisabeth didn't hit quite as hard I think. But always ready to return.
For folks who are curious, here's a homemade documentary of the making of this album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtkeCkGzw9c. Just as genuine as the album itself

You may be right about that because I started with this and backtracked to DeAnn. I just like the songwriting variety here better. He seems more confident and the lyrics/delivery ache just as much.

Awesome, curious what you'll think. I believe he'd be huge for country with a little more exposure. He's an incredible songwriter.

You're not entirely off in that this is very, very raw and underproduced. The guitar playing is fine in my opinion - it's not anything complex or intricate but it's bluesy and soulful. The charm is in the lyrics and delivery, so I guess it either strikes you or it doesn't.

Yeah 18 tracks is a bit hefty, I don't mind because I like them all, but he could have narrowed it to the best 12 just for marketability.

Really enjoying this so far. Your reviews and foray into country have really influenced me this year, Sowing. I've also typically disliked the genre, but the Honey Harper and Waxahatchee releases are two of my favorites for 2020 surprisingly. I'm midway through this now and enjoying it. Absolutely loved Codeine Pills (Part One) and Anita (Part Two).
