I think it has the weakest OST... not that its bad. I just think Yamaoka found his groove with SH2

The soundtrack to one is great, particularly in conjunction with the game, but I must say listening to it as an album is a bit of a rocky ride

lol yea i get it, i just feel that after 1 Yamaoka got more into making "music" for silent hill... And who can blame him, really. the better sound quality and sampling for the PS2 was an advantage only a fool would turn down. It sounds better and it's probably better overall because of it.
But I can't help but deeply admire the magic of working with the limited resources of the PS1 sound engine to achieve the perfect enhancement of a videogame experience that is the SH1 soundtrack. Every track on it works for the betterment of the experience. It achieves something very rare, imo, which is that every track in it feels diagetic. it's the sound of the town that's playing. Not a symbolic representation of it. The more "musical" tracks are few and far in between and play only in cutscenes. The rest is ambient, but still more than just sound design. It's a perfect balance, that i believe can only be achieved in videogames.
My biggest complaint about the rest of the SH sountracks, as much as i adore them, is that they got a little more cinematic. Not saying it was the wrong choice, just that personally i enjoy the SH1 approach much more, in a philosophical way, i guess.

It’s interesting reading the different favourites, but I think when it comes to comparing the SH soundtracks a huge amount of personal investment is involved. It depends on how much the game affected you, be it emotionally or purely from the horror point of view. All of the Yamaoka SH soundtracks (even the later ones) have their merits and have always been a hugely reliable element to the franchise.

This hasn't budged in my top 10 favourite games of all time for like 10 years now and I doubt it ever will. I get that from a gameplay perspective it isn't especially exciting but the score, imagery, atmosphere, level design, it's all so beautiful and cohesive and it's just perfect imo. Also my favourite game soundtrack for about a decade running now too

Agree 100% Gryo.
For me, this is THE game. I can’t even come close to picking another that I adore as much as SH2. The soundtrack on vinyl also sounds absolutely incredible btw, even nearly 20 years later SH2 continues to pleasantly surprise.
