“irresponsible to make those conclusions when album literally just came out. ”
I think it’s irresponsible to 5.0 some irrelevant band’s not-even-their-best-record for the same reason

I gotta hear this asap.

Here is my personal resequencing, for those curious:
1. [10 Good Reasons] (still a great opener)
2. I/m Not Here (a bit more grounded in their usual style than the sprawling opener)
3. Videograms (I like having singles early on, though that's more of a personal preference - in the review I called it out because its placement made no sense with the musical progression of the record)
4. The Arbor (The first indication that the album's a bit heavier and Cure-y than before)
5. Shooting Dennis Hopper Shooting (this is probably my least favorite on the album but I think it works after The Arbor's more languid pacing)
6. Let's Get Lost (this sounds a lot more satisfying as the frantic centerpiece rather than a penultimate track)
7. Auge Maschine (I just put myself in the headpsace of someone listening to this album for the first time and thinking "how do they top Let's Get Lost OH SHIT-")
8. Girl Chewing Gum (I was fine with this song's placement on the album so I'm keeping it relatively close to its original position - it's almost like a breather after those two really heavy songs and before VTR)
9. VTR (Just ensuring the momentum of the record picks back up after Girl Chewing Gum)
10. Sunday Day13 (kind of a fake-out ending, where you think that it's going to close off like Sometimes I Wished... until suddenly)
11. Keep It All To Myself (you have the biggest, most Cure-y song on the whole record. Still don't like this one as much, but thought it worked weirdly well as a closer.)

I held off on this review until I could get a couple of spins on the vinyl version. The Twilight Sad have continued to grow from 'Fourteen Autumns...' to IWBLTATT. On first listen I definitely hear more synths entering the picture, which could be great or bad. Hence, the reason for my delay. But this album is the tits!! It definitely shows growth in the music part and James has always been a strong songwriter. Andy moving more and more into the background or more into a layer player has scared me since it's the guitar sound that originally peaked by interest with James' voice. However, he has done a masterful job of being part of the mix instead of the bombastic guitar in your face. Don't get me wrong I miss it from the first two albums but he has grown in his playing and learned space, layer, and accenting the songs. Brilliant album and looking forward to hopefully seeing them live again in Atlanta soon. Cheers!

this shit is soooooo good. haven't listened to these guys a ton, but i have listened to most of their stuff at least once.
really enjoy the atmospheric elements on here, from the keyboards, to the bass, to the subdued guitar (as jrucks pointed out). very impressed with all the layering. vocal lines are insanely catchy and passionate.
the sequencing is not a problem at all for me but i do see legitimacy in the mixing claims. could be better i suppose, but i think it's a damn fine record either way.
can't wait to sit down with their older stuff more.

This one keeps growing on me, probably their best besides the debut (which I don't think they'll ever top)

4.5 bump time, any atmosphere this siphoned off they made up for with some of the best songwriting they’ve done since the beginning

who do I have to fuck to get a new album this year [2]
They did just release a very good stripped back live album, there are no new songs on it but it’s whetting my appetite for new material…
