I still think most people will try to decide in the first 5 minutes if they like this, but the album needs to be listened to in its entirety to appreciate. I remember loving Phantom of Aleppoville but then being unsure about the rest; it took some time to adjust to the weirdness of Clementine's style although I certainly wouldn't call this a grower.

yeah, it's not exactly an album you need to sink in deeply in order to figure out, whether or not it is conventional

aw ty :-) means a lot coming from such a verbose young man

glad you dig the album too, I get carried away in hype pretty often but this has survived the test of time...it becomes more breathtaking with each listen and just continually solidifies itself as one of my all-time favorite records

verbose but not yet eloquent, i feel reviews like this will help me get there

Phantom of Aleppoville gives me that cracked-egg-over-the-head sensation every time but really the whole thing is a marvel. i loved his debut too but this is much weirder and much more of a Statement album; sometimes i think i might prefer it

I definitely prefer this over his debut. His debut was good but I feel like he hadn't yet learned how to wield his unique gifts. If you follow sports metaphors it was like seeing a rookie with such raw athletic ability that it was mouthwatering, but he didn't learn the playbook/have the discipline yet. This album was, as you said, his breakthrough, coming of age, etc. I just hope he doesn't suddenly start caring about what people think, to the point that he'd let it impact his artistic freedom.

i take your point but i think of it as honing different styles: At Least for Now was such a conclusive art pop statement, tinkered at and perfected over i assume years of trial and error. this is the cycle re-emerging as we're made privy to his experimentation (is this, then, a sequel or deconstruction of ALfN?). in that way both albums fit together nicely despite being completely different

I find his debut precocious in quite an irritating way. This is so bizarre and ends up really loveable, suddenly I understood what this man’s getting at and what he loves.

Two albums are chalk and cheese for me

haha thanks Dewinged, I feel the same about that insane number.

I always wanted the feeling of "going out on top" with like 100, 200, 300 reviews, whatever, with a super emotional write up, but because this place is like a drug I can never do it. I'll inevitably be saying the same thing at review #500 (if I make it that far, I almost certainly will at least stop reviewing and start blogging like it's my job).

Woohoo! I can totally see why this is a 5 for many. I have conflicting feelings because somehow this was objectively one of the best albums of last year yet I couldn't ever put it all together. I'm pretty confident I'll eventually bump this rating though

Haha nice. Yeah man, I go year to year struggling to find albums that are modern day classics, but it's stuff like this that reminds me how easy they are to spot when they do happen. Thrillingly unique, this one.

The weird thing is out of my year end 2017 list, this was originally like 20th but even when I put it there, I recognized this was top 2-3 in terms of most likely albums I would bump to a 5 in the future.
