new album their best fr

“sounds like they know exactly what they want the band to be to me. very consistent and confident album, they had a sound in mind and they went for it”
I don’t mean singularly within the confines of the album itself, I mean within the context of their career. It’s such a departure from what ~to me~ made Young Fathers the group that they are. I guess you took grievance with my choice of the word “classic” in regards to Geronimo for some reason, but what I meant is that that track is perfectly indicative of the signature sound that they came on to the scene with that appealed so much to me in the first place. I think that was pretty clear. New album still has the “hipster dad” lens but the energy, genre, and emotions they filter through said lens are entirely detached from what I liked about them on their first two albums. And without that component, the “hipster dad” aspect is a lot harder to favourably overlook.

“new album their best fr”
I expected this take from Rowan because the new album definitely seems like his kind of thing and that’s cool, but from someone who I have a lot more common ground with taste-wise I’m legitimately horrified that you think that

i mean i never thought the hip-hop elements of their early sound were their strongest aspect even if I did really enjoy their work anyway, so them leaning into their indie-soul side with all the gospelish vocals and such just works for me
i think also something about them is so unequivocally british and nostalgic to that culture and life experience which i feel very 'seen' by, and the clashing of fragility and euphoria that has become an essential theme of their last few releases is something i adore in any piece of music
their recent stuff scratches a lot of the same itch i had for tv on the radio, just less guitar-driven

“ think also something about them is so unequivocally british and nostalgic to that culture and life experience which i feel very 'seen' by”
This actually makes 100% sense and I totally get your perspective now

I even feel that off-hand just through my growing up with a lot of British music and admiring a lot of the culture, I don’t have the direct experience but I completely see what you’re saying and understand the sentiment

i guess i getchu pots. i do miss the hip-hop sometimes but i find their commitment to changing their sound each time pretty admirable. thank god they do cos otherwise they'd still sound like this lmfao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0PmLdLs4L8
i don't know if the new album's their best but i am really into it, reminds me of the Avalanches a bit
