..and I thought the guitar on Keep You was a tad forgettable, but here it doesn't stick out whatsoever.

They pulled a Gates in terms of style change, but Gates' made more sense and was much more effective.

I can hear all the criticisms and they make sense, but I still really like this. This is probably wishful thinking but I think maybe they know what they're doing: they're taking a style that's really hard to go any further with and just sitting with it and focusing on making it the best it can be.
