there are 23 pickslides tho i might've miscounted since i wasn't paying too much attention some of the time and the production kinda covers a few of them up/there are some feedbacky effects that kinda sound like pickslides that i wasn't sure about. also if there were two of them layered i counted it as one, but that only happened twice i think

surprised by how many songs there were only 1 or even 0 pickslides in. tho the opener and last two each had like 5 so

Rowan this is an awesome review, but yeah I could have seen this coming. You did a great job capturing why this band has so far. I still love the stretch of their discog from Siren Song through about half of Endgame, but...yeah. They've been going through the motions for years.

Great review!!! But the rating is killing me, I'd say this is better than Appeal or The Black Market.

The decent tracks on this and Black Market could make a fair enough 3.5 album combined

band should just tough it out and wait 'til 2023 for their next album

Pickslide, not pickleslide lol

It's the noise produced when you scrape the edge of a guitar pick against a string. These guys have used it in a lot of their songs

As someone who only listens to these guys by chance, i was pleasantly surprised of how the bass sounds in some of these songs. Unfortunately the production of the album is not my cup of tea. As for the album itself, i couldn't care less.

These guys have devolved into Pickslides: The Band.

Also the dude who produced this is 90% of the reason the last Hold Steady album was mediocre as fuck.

I haven't listened to the album yet, but I really enjoyed this review! It kind of confirms my fears for this album though... I guess I'll keep my expectations low.

I was a huge fan of Rise Against all the through to (and including) Appeal to Reason. That album was a major change for the band, but it still felt genuine, and it worked! The next 2 albums were so stale, I haven't listened to either of them in years. I will always give new music from them a try, but it's unfortunate to hear that this once again lacks heart.

I don't think I can even tell what a pickslide is. Or maybe I can and I didn't know what it is until now. What's an example of one (time at one song)
