i was actually thinking it sounded a lot like the last song on the air ep, but yeah it has elements of the water ep too

I agree that Dustin sounds great here but I find most of the choruses awful and generic, I'm enjoying the other aspects of it so much now that it's not bothering me much now.

the only negative thing ill say as i am incapable of saying negative things about thrice is that the lyrics are def not his best. i feel he will step it up next album.

I feel like Hurricane and the closer are definitely the best, with The Window, The Long Defeat, and DFA also being standouts

This was much better than I expected. Salt and Shadow really surprised me because it sounds like a perfect mix of Water and Air.

I honestly do not get the appeal of this band. If anyone else released this album, it would be considered 2/5 generic rock

Not necessarily, there are ways to do every style right. Genre wise this isn't anything out the box, but Thrice made it engaging for the last two albums.

It's just good, solid alternative rock. There's nothing wrong with that

i have to agree with spirit.

this ain't bad stuff, just harmless alt rock like whispers said, but it's not all that great. i think thrice have been making the same music for some time now. i love when they deviate from the usual and deliver beautiful songs like the ethereal closer on this

I love it. They got the whole generic verse-chorus-jam-verse-chrorus-bridge-chorus thing down and I love it.

I think what separated some of their other stuff that people loved was that it was heavier and didn't follow a particular song pattern on nearly every song. I can't disagree because this would probably be a 4.5 if it were.

The songs are great. Love the jams at the end of The Window and Whistleblower. Very similar to M/M with a few other elements sprinkled in.

With the first listen, I don't think any of these songs are better than Listen Through Me and Treading Paper though. So that's a bummer. But it's still a very solid album.

Wish there were more songs like Death from Above. But they're basically just a rock band now, no longer post-hardcore really. Hate me for saying this but stylistically Thrice these days isn't a far cry from Nickelback, 3 Doors Down or a rocked up The Fray.

comparisons to 3 doors down and nickelback and the like are just unfounded.
