I think it might've had to do with being the lead single and all, but it it was a very stupid move agreed

"Here is my question; Why is "Gimme Shelter" the first song on the album? Everything sounds duller after hearing it. It should be the last song--not the first."
Depends on the rest of the album really. For example, "Highway Star" is the opener of Machine Head but the album is brilliant overall so the song doesn't really outshine the rest of the tracks. Same thing with "Victim of Changes" and Sad Wings of Destiny, etc.

The problem with this imo is that the quality gap between Shelter and the song immediately following it is way too one-way to be for the album's good. Now 'love in vain' is a good song, but it's obviously no
'Gimme Shelter'.

I have this other review for Nick Oliveri's Death Acoustic that I'm not sure whether or not to post right now.

The album is half country and half blues/gospel. The energy for those two genres is so different, and the album suffers a little for it--although it's still a 4 for me.

I'm a fleabit peanut monkey
All my friends are junkies
That's not really true
"Monkey Man" would be my favorite if not for "Gimme Shelter."

The entire title track is incredibly stupid, but it's still a lot of fun to jam

Hey boys, I think we need another verse to drag this out:
I was dreaming of a steel guitar engagement
When you drunk my health in scented Jasmine tea
And you knifed me in my dirty filthy basement
With that jaded, faded, junky nurse
But yeah, it's a great jam in the chorus
