That hardly sounds like the Midlake I know, but not bad.

It's definitely a change in style that could take some time getting used to for some fans. I suppose it also depends on how much psych, prog, and folk you like.

You did. It's not so much as a direct comparison as a frame of reference.

Haha. Don't expect this to sound like Aqualung, though. It's definitely different and its own thing.

Nice review! Today's Midlake has become more of a pop band than an indie band. The sounds and melodies on this disc are good and here and there the band comes close to their former glory, but all in all this release painfully exposes the lack of a songwriter as good as Smith among the remaining bandmembers.

I saw these guys live about two weeks ago, and although the show rocked here and there, the magic was not there. The magic that I felt so strong all three times I saw them live in the past couple of years.

Hopefully this album, although a nice listen, is sort of coming down album for the band. They still need to find their new form I'm afraid.

I'm sure a lot of people are going to miss Smith, but this style they've adopted is, to my ears, their

best choice so far. What specifically irked you about the album? There's a lot of draw from the same

time period that Van Occupanther borrowed from, just taking different artists as a launching point.

Having listened to this a couple times and then some of their old stuff, I must say I like this much better. I have yet to listen to an entire album pre-Smith departure, but Antiphon is beautiful in the most peculiar ways (the flute in Aurora Gone, the vocals in It's Going Down, the bass lines in The Old and the Young, the muffled percussion and etc, all make this album beyond enjoyable).

Disagreed. Van Occupanther has one or two great songs, and the rest is enjoyable to passable.

The second half of Van Occupanther is essentially dead weight. Roscoe and Head Home single-handedly save that record from being a 3.
