"the so-called Unholy Trinity of British doom metal bands (the other two being My Dying Bride and Anathema)"
I laughed so hard with this sentence.

I myself think that "Bloody Kisses" and "TLTS" suprass this one. For me, PL worked best without the nessessity of adding mandatory death-metal elements to their music, and seeing how they omitted them pretty early in their career, I'd say they knew what they were doing.
I don't seem "Bloody Kisses" as a doom record, though. I'd say it's a rock album that surpasses the limitations of that genre.

This is the best of their Death/Doom era.
|
| |
I should check this out then. I heard their debut was terrible so I'll avoid that.
|
| |
Debut is meh, but this was a big improvement.
|
| |
ohhhh yeah debut was puke
|
| |
It sounded is if they recorded their first demo then released it as their debut album.
|
| |
Agreed, their debut is not a good album, but the guitar tone is so sick.

This was a milestone, good to see it reviewed at last. One of the first doom metal albums I heard, and I heard it a lot. Very soothing, so raw and melodic. Dead Emotion is a favorite, the part from 3.03-3.50 = precious.
