The only album Blur have made that is nothing but 'product'
|

I have good memories of it but I can see where you're coming from. I suppose the fact that The Universal is in the British Gas advert probably doesn't help your opinion that it's a product haha.

Best Days and Universal are all I really listen to but fuck they're jams

The Universal is a great tune. This does have its moments but it's just a total cash in on the very worst elements of Britpop. It was roughly around this time period that I turned to The Who and my soul was saved.

Isnt it scientifically impossible to hate The Universal?

They just don't make arms around your mates after 8 pints anthems like they used to.

Massively dude. That era is chock full of 'em. That instantaneous moment where you generally feel like you're going to 'live forever'
It was a real refresher after Dirt, idols head blown off, and Downward Spiral.

Lonesome Street has that vibe about it, but it still doesn't feel like they're trying to "relive past glories" or whatever

Agreed hard. Pyongyang has the old magic in spades as well. The Magic Whip is special. Blur have always had 'something' that makes them so endearing. Maybe it's just cos their fellow Essex lads I dunno.

I agree, I think Damon and the boys just bring so much charm to the music they make. As a northerner I'm supposed to prefer Oasis. I mean, the first 2 albums are great but Blur are better overall.

jordy literally what the fuck how can you not feel yourself being lifted up in that chorus
Blur have that perfect balance between resonance, experimentation and just putting out stomping bangers agreed

Back in the day I was die hard Blur. Then after be here now it was Oasis for me. Blur have always held a special place though. Since Magic Whip that love for them has come back. There's absolutely no way Oasis could make such a fresh sounding relevant album.
One thing that can't be understated though is just how ridiculously massive Oasis were. They were the last of the big rock bands the likes of which haven't been seen since.

| |
I suppose Oasis just had more widespread appeal than any other bands at the time. Even now Oasis are more popular than many current British rock bands.

bad opinions jordy smh
Oasis definitely absolutely killed the stadium-filling summertime britpop style like no one else could or has since - problem is once that sound was dead they couldn't transform like Blur did to stay relevant. Blur did their best work when they recognised they were about to jump the shark and changed tack instead
|
| |
I think you've hit the nail on the head there Rowan
The closest we've gotten to a massive rock band since then is Arctic Monkeys and they do nothing for me.
