@ SmersH

At first glance I thought it was better than Lights myself, but I think the thing that really hurt Lights was an absence of a change of pace, with "Zero Orchestra" being the only number with a sort-of-high BPM. Basically by the time "Non Populus" rolled around I was practically begging for another rocker, that said the songs themselves are pretty mint. It's one of those weird albums which sounds better when the songs are evaluated as individual, independent pieces. However the thing about Arrows is that its songs simply don't have the sophistication or memorability of Good's better previous works. It's decent rock-by-numbers, and that's the best I can say about it.

Hm, i see where you're coming from. Perhaps re-evaluating Lights might be in order... I just remember, despite all the bombast of Zero Orchestra, and even the title track, the rest of them left me cold. But, perhaps as you say... on their own.

I think that's exactly why i'm liking this more, as a result. It's refreshing to hear Matt break out, even if it's more by numbers... I don't know... this is why i haven't written a review. Organizing the feels into something coherent doesn't work all that well.

Well, here's a thought mate: try listening to "What If I Can't See The Stars, Mildred?", "Non Populus", and "Set Me On Fire" independently...the first two end in slabs of post-rock that are probably better than anything Explosions in the Sky have put out in the past six years, while I just can't get my head around the way Good utters the phrase "screams...set me on fireeeee" in the last one.

I'll say this for Arrows, though: I like "Guns of Carolina" and the title track quite a bit. Can easily see them both being good live cuts.

It's interesting you say that because I typically think the songs are lacking on their own in LOES, but as a whole, I think that album is the best he's put out in years. It's gotten constant playtime on my ipod since it was released because I can listen to the whole thing front-to-back over and over. The flow of the tracks is pretty incredible, in my opinion.

I agree with Irving, the individual tracks on Lights... are pretty amazing, but, I dunno. For example, when I listened to the album as a whole when it came out I never noticed Non Populus, just cause of bad pacing or whatever...but when it pops up on shuffle or whatever it's difficult not to notice it

Yeah I can understand that. I had a different experience in that I listened to the album from start to finish, but when song 6 came on (non-populus) I knew for certain I'd be coming back to it.

Well yeah, it's totally full of slow songs, and it's not the album I'm going to put on as I'm pumping myself up for a friday evening or anything, but I enjoy it immensely when the time calls for it.

I do find it dreary in a depressing sense, but certainly not boring, or dull. And matt good wouldn't be matt good without a fait bit of despondency running through his music.

After 2 listens this album is quite enjoyable. There isn't much in the way of instant classic songs but the album as a whole flows well and most of the songs are quite to very good. It's nice to have a more upbeat, rocking album again. This is the most consistently rocking album of his career I think and it's 10 albums in, not bad.

Favourites right now are Via Dolorosa, Letters In Wartime, and Garden of Knives.

This record is outstanding. The reason that you can't pick out an instant classic MG song is because it goes beyond them. Not in a "better than" sense, there are certainly nods to his previous work but I find the songs to be more full. Garden of Knives is just incredible, Via Dolorosa and Hey Hell Heaven are upbeat rockin MG style anthems. I can hear hints of his older stuff in Letters in Wartime (which is the most fitting choice for a closure out of any of these songs) and in Mutineering. I could have done without Had It Coming, but I love the feel of We're Long Gone. Lights was a beautiful album, start to finish. I find that I listen to certain "groups" of songs from it. Like Extraordinary Fades through Shallow's Low, tagging Non Populous on the end, Mildred next to Zero and then Set Me on Fire through Darlin. Arrows definitely does not come off as a "follow up", Matt made it pretty clear this was going to be a rock record. And it is.

This has gone up to 4 for me and I could see it going a little higher yet. There is more standout stuff than I gave it credit for but you're right, the songs are more full. Garden of Knives reminds me of the dark tone of Beautiful Midnight but with a slight positive spark to it. Certain vocal parts of Mutineering remind a lot of Tripoli. I kind of enjoy Had It Coming in context of the rest of the album and it only adds to the variety.

There's a confidence or passion that lacked in the vocal department on LOES and I'm very glad to say we got it back with this album. Other than that though LOES was great.
