Would you say you enjoy this as much as Sympathetic Resonance? That's my favorite John Arch/Jim Matheos work - more than anything by OSI or Fates Warning even.

Despite the comparisons, Arch/Matheos is still pretty different from this... so, I could definitely see listening to this or that at different times, during different moods.

Great review Willie. Really looking forward to hearing this.

fwx is bottom tier fates dude!

They've been incredibly consistent though, FWX only ranks above Night on Brocken but it's still great.

Yeah, even 'bottom-tier' Fates Warning is really good... and I'd say FWX is better than Night on Broken and No Exit.

No Exit is my favourite Fates Warning album.

Will definitely give this a listen when it comes out.

I think the only thing I'll be sad about this album is the absence of Mark Zonder. I was really inspired by him throughout his tenure with Fates.

The Ivory Gate of Dreams is a collection of unfinished songs all with a similar lyrical theme.

If you're into prog then start with Awaken the Guardian. If not, maybe try this one (when it's released) or Perfect Symmetry.

ha ha. No... Or is it? That's my same complaint with A Pleasant Shade of Grey -- it's supposed to be one song, but there's no flow and it just feels like a series of undeveloped songs.

Yeah Ivory Gate is hardly perfect but it still rules. So does No Exit as a whole, but it's probably my

least favourite out of the whole Spectre-Parells period.

knowledge that Fates Warning wasn't the first to write a disjointed pseudo-epic won't increase my enjoyment or appreciation. It feels like lazy songwriting to me, because they don't have to work on hooks and transitions or creating songs that have beginning, middles and ends.

The Ivory Gate of Dreams isn't perfect agreed but it has some of the band's finest moments imo, even if those moments aren't presented in the most cohesive way.
