Nice review, Nag.
I still haven't given this a proper listen but what I have heard from it I've found to be enjoyable despite not being on a par with A Trick of the Tail, which has really grown on me recently.

Thanks everyone.
Even if at that point, Hackett was about to call it a day, he is also very fond of WAW and rightfully so as it features some of his most accomplished guitar work.
True, but compared to ATOTT Hackett's role is much smaller.
picked up this and trick on vinyl a few days ago.
Nice.
This is another band that I really should be listening to but just haven't had the chance. Ugh the amount of music out there is just mind-blowing. A clear downside to reviewing new releases is that you often end up missing out on the older stuff (like these Genesis gems).
I get where you're coming from, but when you do get to the old stuff, remember Genesis!

That's exactly what it is, check out the whole thing though.

Yeah, shame that Genesis restrained Hackett's credits and space. The band's face wouldnt be the same if they gave him more freedom on the run.
Also, while not bad, Your Own Special Way is the only skippable song on here. It would have been welcome in any subsequent albums though. My songs ranking;
Eleventh Earl of Mar - 5/5
One for the Vine - 5/5
Your Own Special Way - 3/5
Wot Gorilla - 4/5
All in a Mouse's Night - 4/5
Blood on the Rooftops - 5/5
Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers/In that Quiet Earth - 5/5
Afterglow - 5/5

I need to add that contrary to popular belief, the loss of Gabriel was really not as severe to the band as the loss of Hackett was.

it was still pretty bad though ;(

Yeah no doubt about it. Without Gabriel, gone were the theatrical aspects, the deep lyrics and his unique vocals. As for Hackett, just run through his discog and see how he was an essential part of the band musically.

Agreed.

Yeah it's not until you listen to his solo albums that you realise quite how big a roll he played in Genesis. His solo stuff sounds more like classic era Genesis than pretty much any of the other members solo albums or side projects except maybe Gabriel's early solo stuff.

I didn't see that tour myself and it's still a classic album. I've seen them 3 times though, starting with Duke tour.
