The production isn't god-awful, it just sounds like everything's being played through a tin can. There's a raw quality that's good (Bless the Martyr, the Chariot's stuff) where things sound huge and massive because they didn't cut out a bunch of the low-end harmonics like they have to in a normal mastering pass. This has just always weak and tinny to me. Not the worst out there by far, tho.

Obviously The Chariot/Norma Jean debate is a huge taste thing. Norma Jean go for a much more ambitious, serious approach whereas The Chariot are obviously just having a ton of fun. I find that all of Norma Jean's records suffer in some way because they take themselves more seriously, and therefore the weaknesses show even more. Honestly, The Chariot get away with more because there is such a strong presence of fun and recklessness in their sound.

And I think Josh Scogan is a stud of a vocalist, but hey, AAAALLLLlllll of this is a massive IMO so whatevs. This album has it's shining moments (Disconnecktie is beautiful).

Well, Norma Jean's last record was pretty good...

But Long Live shits all over Norma Jean's first 4 records.

i find this album to be way more enjoyable than long live... long live has too many guitar squeals.

Long Live is awesome in its own way though

I really like the vocals on this album considering it does sound pretty raw and fits well with the bands style. The guy above me is a fucking idiot though.

It's only a 50 second sample but it reminds me of the rawer parts on Meridional. I can see The Chariot comparion though.

"hell, this album won a grammy"

Not true actually. The album's ARTWORK was NOMINATED for a grammy, but didn't win.

Don't mean to sound nit-picky though. Great review
p.s. this album totally deserves a grammy though. If only...
