Awake is a great album, don't get me wrong, I just don't quite find it to be at this level. I find this and Scenes to be their classics, although with a catalogue as large and diverse as theirs, it's understandable that most would rank their discography differently.

^ Nothing wrong with that statement. I just think it is the fact that I don't agree with it and that it's the conlusion of the review, that I saw the perfect opportunity to show my love for Awake ;)

As good as Awake is, it can get a little too 'samey' if you know what I mean. This is the perfect balance of songwriting and technical skill, which you already said in the review. Great album and review

I can see what you mean with 'samey' but that is until one is past the amount of listens required. Awake took longer for me to fully digest than this but once it 'clicked' it was not all that different; as you said, the perfect balance of songwriting and technical skill. And the fact that it's darker and more brooding just makes it the perfect counterpart to this. In fact it's so close between IaW and Awake that I see them as two albums that are related because I can't decide which is better. Light and dark, so to say.

Thanks Deviant.

Yeah, it certainly took me a few listens to appreciate Awake, wasn't instant like most DT records were for me. I find that it's excellent, but not quite to the level of Images. But I won't go into it too deep here, my review will speak for itself.

great review though, this album has a couple fucking outstanding songs (metropolis, learning to live) but the other tracks really dont do it for me. awake is pretty sweet as well, the silent man is one of my favorite DT songs. scenes from a memory and black clouds are my top 2 DT albums

RiseToRemain, don't give DT fans a bad name, please.

Thanks Brick. I like The Silent Man too, one of my favorite songs from Awake, although my #1 favorite is Lie. The review is in the works.

Black Clouds is at a 4 right now, don't think it's gonna get higher than that but we'll see. I'm actually cranking A Rite of Passage right now.

Troll fail.

Ted Kirkpatrick, Tomas Haake, Dave Lombardo, Hellhammer ,Blake Richardson, Zach Hill, ....to name a few. Please remove your firmly wedged cranium from your aft quarters.

Nice troll fighting, bro.

If I had to rec you a Dream Theater album it would be Train of Thought. Might be up your alley, as its their heaviest, most metal-oriented album.

I fight trolls like a cheesy power metal band; that is, with style!

And I've heard much DT (including Train of Thought).

Yeah, I figured you'd probably heard it. Probably ranks about 4th overall for me for DT albums but it's the one I listen to the most.

As I Am is my favorite DT song, followed by A Change of Seasons.

Yeah, idk, something about DT is just off-putting to me. Never can get into them.

They're not for everyone. It was surprisingly easy for me to get into them, despite me not being big on metal or prog.
