This albums is their worst in years. Guitar lines are boring, Renkse sounds exhausted. I'm very upset about it...

very good review. I'm sure as hell picking this one up.

i dunno about that summary. to me the most "complete" Katatonia album was Brave Murder Day and everything else has just been not as good

You're thinking of someone's comment. There's nowhere in my summary or review where I call this the most complete Katatonia album. I think it's this comment by rajivgomes: as i said in the sound off the most complete Katatonia album ...
@alsid: I don't see how you can think this is the worst in years, especially if you were ok with the last few. It just takes longer to get into because the songs aren't as simple and repetitive as before. Also, Tonight's Decision gets the award for worst album.

ugh i jumbled shit together. either way i think they used up most of their potential on BMD...

I would have probably settled for just a bit more variation in the songwriting.
Glad to see they took things up a couple notches. Album is a very high 4 in my book.

I like that album, but I don't think it's as good as everyone else. I thought they started stepping up with Discouraged Ones.
I would have probably settled for just a bit more variation in the songwriting.
I would have probably settled for just minor changes too, because I like what they do. But I was hoping for something more.

I agree that BMD isn't the best thing since sliced bread even though some people have made it out to be. for me its a low 4. I just like that doomy-melodeath style more than their slightly edgy hard rock.

Yeah, I agree with red. I was starting to think I was the only one who thought that they've gotten progressively worse ever since BMD. The only songs I've heard off TGCD I thought were incredibly meh and honestly sounded a lot like Tool whom I don't really like. I definitely think they had more of their own sound back in the day than they do now.

summary should say: katatonia covers katatonia

"...finally start to deliver on the potential they've displayed for their whole career."
lolwut? they've been delivering for ages.

They've been delivering but not to their potential. What's so hard to understand about that?
I just like that doomy-melodeath style more than their slightly edgy hard rock. I like the doomy melodeath stuff too, I just never thought they did it as well as others out there.

Just got back from seeing them at King Tuts - they were brilliant, very heavy. Paradise lost were also good, great atmosphere and great banter with the crowd

great review (as always) Trey. I'll TRY and listen to this in the weekend, but sadly I can't make any promises as I already have Wavering Radiant, new Slayer, DevilDriver's debut and some metalcore band to listen to.

ill probably give this a listen eventually, but i still haven't even listened to most of their latter discography
great review as usual trey

still need to give this a listen

This grew on me quickly. This is easily the best Katatonia record since Last Fair Deal Gone Down, and it rivals that album for the best in their whole discography imo. The first 3 songs are so good.
