I have this one, American Beauty, and Aoxomoxoa and I honestly prefer the other two
not a big Dead fan though so maybe this one has never clicked with me... I should give it/them another shot

oh and Working Man's but I've barely listened to it

I only really like the Dead's earlier more psychedelic/jam-based stuff so it's no surprise that I prefer this to everything thing that came after.

they don't seem like a studio band in the first place so I never really bothered trying to familiarize an album if you know what I mean, but American Beauty has some beautiful songs on it

Well this album is half live, one of the reasons why it's their best non-completely live album ;)
|
| |
Hmm maybe, although most of their important albums/the ones I care about all have reviews already (unlike a lot bands/artists that need more attention around here) so I probably won't make it a priority.

Thourough and interesting review of a little discussed Grateful Dead album. Though you may want to edit out that pigpen did a good job with his organ on New Potato Caboose. He didn't play on the album, he found the sound too complicated as opposed to before. Tom Constanten did.
