Yeah this nails that when you're in the mood. I just slightly prefer the style of the previous 3, the songwriting was pretty much perfect and flawless.

They do sound especially original and more layered on HV and this, while being two very different albums.

Yeah, stylistically the previous 3 have more post-punk revival and straightforward, driving tracks. HV is artsier but probably their lightest and least depressing, at least musically.

this has grown on me a lott but its still pretty inconsistent i think. like half of this album is top-tier national though

i should live in salt, don't swallow the cap, sea of love, this is the last time, graceless, and pink rabbits are all absolutely stunning

the rest i can't really get into

This isn't quite a 5 for me b/c of a couple songs not quite holding up the consistency that the last 3 albums did. They're still all at least great though. Fireproof, Hard to Find, and Slipped grew on me a lot most recently.

I mean I also consider this a 4.8 but 4.8 rounds up to 5 so it's a 5

I'd probably do the same if I were still a user. If SWB is at least a 4.7 then The National will easily be among the most consistently amazing bands of this century so far. Planetarium and El Vy help with that too, even tho they only featured one member each.

They're already the most consistent band of the century imo, no one else has released two 5s this century imo let alone 3 in a row preceded by a 4.5

In terms of having at least mid-level popularity sure Boney, since Radiohead, Brand New, Swans, Nick Cave, and Tool aren't quite prolific enough imo. Waiting more than 4 years to make an album is where I'd draw the line of who can count. I have personal favorites, some of which more or less match The National, like Steven Wilson, Alcest, and Ulver.
