I almost went on a rant about Desert and then I realized those are not his views, but he is criticizing

Nice.

Saw some fans on their Fb calling it "homophobic" and "anti-left." Characterization is a thing...

To be fair if you're not really paying too much attention and only hear the second verse you're taken aback.

Anyway this is very good, maybe a little slow at times, but I'll have to digest it. I don't like it as much as The Devil and God (yet) so I'll give it a 4 for now.

Yeah it wasn’t clear to me the first time either but then the lightbulb went off where it was like "oh, it's a criticism"

Man you guys must live in some Bible belt towns if you hear "boys kissing boys with their mouths in the street" and don't immediately jump to the conclusion that he's mocking.

I definitely don't live in the bible belt

You realize a lot of people actually have these views right? And they aren't confined to some religious sector of the south and midwest?

I fail to see your point, and bolding the sentence isn't enlightening

I don't think it's obvious he's mocking (especially if you're listening only casually) considering there's a large swath of the American populace that still thinks this way and there would have been no guarantee that Lacey isn't one of them

Gonna have to agree to disagree on this cause I pictured Duck Dynasty when he was singing this.

Either way, it's interesting to hear such a vividly political Brand New on that jam. I was taken aback the first time and quickly realized what was going on. Always a bold move to take on the POV of an ignorant narrator, or to be blatantly ironic in your lyrics. Oh BN

Hey you guys I think Sufjan really hid bodies beneath the floorboards too.

The difference with Sufjan is that we know who John Wayne Gacy Jr is

I didn't know Lacey's political views really

Good call with "John Wayne Gacy Jr." as a comp, @Ghosts. I love when artists do it - as much as I hold Brand New in high regard, never thought Jesse would write such a song. It's very akin to his buddy Kevin Devine

I live on Long Island.

We did a mock election in my school. 800 people voted. It was 70% Trump.
