I think a lot of people went into this record with set up expectations of what they wanted to hear (whether it be a heavier record or more atmospheric like Sunbather) and were disappointed when the final product wasn't what they wanted to hear instead of entering the listening experience with a blank canvas and no expectations.

People wanted a Sunbather 2, and are displeased with not getting Sunbather 2

I guess so, I'd have been super happy with pretty much any direction they would have took if it was decent quality. Even if they decided to just be standard post rock. I think they tried to go in lots of directions and it sounds like a mess, there's no consistent atmosphere, because there's always an elemnt with a different style ready to be jigsawed asap.
That's why Luna is easily the best track. Because it maintains its atmosphere all the way through and is consistent in what it tries to achieve. The last track does okay as well, albeit not as strongly. The rest of the tracks are like someone mixed up a deafheaven, loaded it into a paintball gun and fired it at a wall and made an album out of the pattern it left

I totally get what you mean. I think it really comes down to how you feel about the disparate nature of the tracks and how they progress - if it's something that bothers you, this album is going to be very underwhelming.
Personally, I enjoy it as a 'different' kind of Deafheaven. I can hear the same band in there, even though the general structure is a totally different beast. I enjoy the scattered nature of the songs.

its really not so much different from anything theyve done. its just more towards the blackened post-rock-y stuff than shoegaze metal

i'd disagree with that description. i think part of the ambition in the album was trying to avoid simple genre classifications like that
