Agreed, I loved leaving meaning more than most and the Beggar was a great mix of seer darkness and dirge with the ethereal touches of leaving meaning.

leaving meaning is underrated, I am still very puzzled by its lukewarm reception
it was the perfect choice for Gira to move forward after the trilogy

Because some people act like the trilogy is the pinnacle of music, so it was 'disappointing.'

In many ways I also think that about the trilogy, but you're right; leaving.meaning should be judged by its own merits.

My opinion on this one has softened, but I still feel that it is more meandering and less refined than its follow ups. "The Seer Returns," "93 Ave. Blues" and "Apostate" are great, but this one feels more like a template for the others than a complete work (for me).

If you look at works like Leaving Meaning and The Beggar and compare them to other bands that are releasing albums 40 years into their career the difference in quality and creativity is astounding. Dig it or not, that alone is a big plus for this band

Name 3 other bands that are 40 years into their career and still dropping highlights like Ebbing... I will wait

Not bands, but Bowie, Cohen, Walker? But yeah, I’m completely with you on this one.

Judas Priest, Helloween, and Carcass all dropped bangers for their latest albums, but those are very much the exception. Pretty amazing to still have something to say this far in.

Yes, all good points. Bowie had a great catalogue for such a lengthy career (admittedly I need to spend more time with it to fully appreciate). Cohen as well, and I did enjoy the new Priest quite a bit. Thanks for reminding me to check out some good tunes today
