Yup you nailed it lol

These modern "old school" dm bands are very hit-or-miss for me. I like a few, but a lot of it just bores me to tears.

This is just a style of death metal I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of when it’s done well. Riffy, heavy, groovy, dynamic, just fuckin slaps man

how the heck does this make you want to listen to Morbid Angel? Unless you mean stuff after Covenant, which I don't really recognize as part of Morbid Angel's catalog lol

I get that some of these bands do sound quite a bit like their predecessors but tbh many of them really capture their own sound, and they often take a couple listens to really find the distinguishing features and their own charm.

For example- I'm sure most of you would listen to Kommand (USA-CA) and be like 'oh this is just Bolt Thrower or Convulse with different vokillz' but they do have a sound that I would recognize as being theirs

This just sounds like Gateways to Annihilation, but less organic and more gratuitous. It pales in comparison as far as vocals and songwriting imho. Might need to relisten but that’s all I was getting.

Tbh I like this album waaaaay more than I like anything Morbid Angel did. Then again, I was never overly keen on their music for whatever reason.

in the eye of nothing by gorephilia is a much closer modern companion to prime morbid angel if we're going that route
