Well the judgement is they're ok/quite good so I haven't cast them down to the pits of hell - I've listened to some songs off the earlier albums but I should sit down with them and give them a proper go.

My guess is they're more of a great highlights than a great albums band for you, across their discog though I bet you'd find at least an album's worth of songs you love.

Yeah definitely, this album has three songs I like a lot: Do You, Rainy Taxi, Inside Out.
Then you have kinda awkward stuff like Outlier (the Garden State lyric is quite pukey in particular) and Knock Knock Knock which has a bad chorus for me (the "and I sees yous..." bit). The opener is absolute typical Spoon, just ok, totally neutral.
Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga ratings would be:
1: Ghost lingers [5]
2: R&S [4.5]
3: Black Like Me [4/5]
4: Cherry Bomb [4/5]
5: Don't You Evah [4/5]
6: Finer Feelings [3.5/5]
7: Make Me a Target [3/5]
8: The Underdog [3/5]
9: Little Cigarette [2.5/5]
10: Ragga [2.5/5]
Overall 3.5/5

Interestimg, 3 of your bottom 4 would be in my top 5 on that probably.

My bottom two are really by far and away my bottom two - Cigarette I find a bit all over the place and a little cheesy (sounds like a bad version of a 'Summerteeth' song in a way) and Ragga tries to skank (and it really shouldn't). Make Me a Target is another 'meat and potatoes' opener (really ploddy, awful lyrics 'nuclear pricks with dialect dicks' or whatever it is), I dunno why I find their openers so average. The last 90 seconds of 'Target' is great though, a purely instrumental version with more experimentation would have been great.

A whole album of stuff like 'Ghost of You Lingers' I'd probably 5 if they kept the quality control high

You see I love Don't Make Me, witty anti-Bush lyrics, and as you say the last 90 seconds is amazing. Cigarette I find a fun little tune, maybe a bit inconsequential but I love it. Underdog is a great pop song.
I love their openers, maybe try The Beast and Dragon, Adored from Gimme Fiction, pretty different, you might dig.
Not trying to force Spoon on you of course but I want to try to understand this rift in our tastes.

I maybe underrated Underdog listening to it now, that might be more a 3.5-4. I appreciate the attempt at political lyrics on 'Target' but I just find those opening verses a bit clunky, they just stand out too much for my personal liking, but I get their appeal.
Stop Spoon-feeding me ;) - I wouldn't say a rift at all, I still like a lot of Spoon songs, I just pick and choose with them like you said.
I'll definitely try more of their stuff before the new one comes out.

Well, from all the Spoon I've listened to I'm 100% in agreement
Maybe that's part of the problem, I really wish they'd release more material like that

Listened to this today, I'd heard the bigger songs from the last two albums on a local station and always had the same feeling of "man i wanna hear more by them" so finally I got around to it
This is so good, the beautiful marriage of great songs, great sound/production and an actual great band behind it all as well. Def gonna check out more by them
