Album is the definition of a grower. The middle of the album is its best, specifically tracks 4,5,6. Production is also unbelievable. Brain Dance is over-rated, but my god Backpfiefengesicht is unreal. Might be on par with Joy of Motion.

was just thinking it was about time for a new AAL album and then I realized I'd never listened to this

You're a lucky son of a bitch

Joys of Motion is still their best, followed by Weightless.

If you guys haven't caught AAL live yet you fools have to. As mentally interesting the albums are, they've gotten to the point where that shit comes ALIVE when they play it live.

when i saw them on Thrice's farewell tour they were awful, just stood there and shredded

Yeah, tbh, same. Well, not awful. Their drummer was INSANE. He was clearly having fun. Tosin and Javier just seemed to concentrate on their instruments and Tosin really didn't say much. They did just stand their and shred.
It was a massive contrast to their openers...Intervals and Plini. Plini and Aaron were just grinning the whole time and having a blast.
AAL was boring AF to watch live but sounded amazing.

Dude! "Shredded". I've seen them twice, first when they were doing a Europe tour with TesseracT and this time on the tour with Periphery, and lemme tell ya, the show with Periphery was transcendent. Pure feels.

| |
I've seen them, it was fine. I was behind the sound guy so I spent most of the time watching the levels constantly hitting the red zone and him not doing anything about it lol
|
| |
No offense whatsoever to Plini and Aarontervals, but AAL is on a different planet from those guys. You can't really compare those bands musically and, by association, their stage acts.
But that being said, AAL doesn't need an act. Their performance was transcendent. I can't think of a more visceral musical performance than they delivered.

They were okay on the Thrice Farewell Tour, but waaaaaay better when I saw them with After the Burial.

Tosin was having so much fun.

must have been an off night for them I guess. I mean the music didn't suffer at all. They just didn't look up from their guitars much. Drummer gave the best solo I've ever seen live tho
|
| |
I think the crowd might have something to do with it. Everyone in the audience clapping perfectly to off-time beats brought a huge grin to Tosin's face.

"Everyone in the audience clapping perfectly to off-time beats"
That's almost as impressive as the band
|
| |
Haha that is always hilarious yeah
|
| |
This is exactly the kind of music I'd be making if I were an artist and skilled enough with a guitar. When I daydream creatively it often sounds similar though not quite as repetitive Animals as Leaders.

Matt Garstka is easily one of the most talented drummers out there today.

An interview Matt gave with Modern Drummer last year.
Some seriously complex stuff goes into how he wrote this album; I can hardly understand the parallel time sig stuff

The Brain Dance is still such an incredible song
really hoping for a new AAL album soon.
