i'm kind of a fiend for it. started on Allen Ginsberg and other Beats and just hit the ground running. my routine is usually finding poets i dig on the zines i go on (ditch poetry is the best), and then i buy their books. i've found a lot of great contemporary stuff that way. i write a lot of it myself too

Alex Lemon, Mike Doughty, Mary Karr, William D. Waltz, and Matt Rasmussen are a few off the top of my head. If you want specific books, try Alex Lemon's "Fancy Beasts," Mike Doughty's "Slanky," and Matt Rasmussen's "Black Aperture." That last one is a whole book inspired by the author's brother's suicide. He looks at the tragedy from every angle and creates some of the clearest, and some of the most devastating poetry I've ever read.
Those guys are all pretty modern, but if you want to get into the guys who influenced them, just start with Allen Ginsberg and Charles Bukowski. They're both geniuses and they've both written like, piles of stuff. Can't go wrong with any of it really

I know the last two but only one of them us a genius while the other is just a bonafide asshole who happened to be a poet, but I still somehow have his you get so alone and it has some cool poems here and there. I appr the recs, will check them eventually, can you post a single poem by one of them perhaps?

Plath, Ginsberg, Bukowski, Neruda and Berryman are the best poets for me, with Plath being #1. I don't think i've ever read any contemporary poetry, I need to change that lol

Have tonnes of friends really into poetry but have never really gotten into it at all myself. The funny thing is they aren't into well written poetic music which has always shocked me.,

Bukowski is definitely a genius, man. how clear he is while still remaining so conversational and unpretentious is nothing short of amazing.
and yeah, check this one out: http://www.kenyonreview.org/kr-online-issue/2013-fall/selections/alex-lemon-763879/
You can't go wrong with any Alex Lemon. Also, e.e. cummings needs more love from everyone. dude did things NOBODY else did.
And guys, seriously, this place is a goddamn goldmine: http://www.ditchpoetry.com/
