@rabid if you kill a bunch of creatures in the game then you just start neutral playthrough, monster genocide is when you actively seek to kill every monster in the world. Plus on my first play there were a few ennemies that I killed because of how aggressive they were towards me (whereas others not so much), didn't feel like being an absolute pacifist.

I'd def say that there are a bunch of characters and encounters with moral grey areas, not to mention those whom we understand, through the story, are in fact more than what they seem at first glance.

Yeah Rabid, I just think your perception of the game is too influenced by what the public made the game out to be. Fuck what other people are telling you to do, play with your own morale system.

I can't really hear any of the music here anymore without thinking of SiIvaGunner's remixes

I don't dig the EDM bargain bin remixes of the soundtrack but there's some genuinely captivating fan music.

SiIva's stuff is much more parody than EDM, they'd mash up Dogsong with the Seinfeld theme, remix Bonetroussle to sound like We Are Number One, stuff like that

DS lore is stupid and 90% makes no sense, we are not discussing lore/characters/story here.

I use it to compare the way the game treats the player. DS treats you with respect for your intelligence, throwing you subtle curve balls every now and then to force you to ponder whether things are as straight forward as you inicially thought.

But mostly the reason that in this particular aspect I think DS is far superior is because it doesn't JUDGE you. Why do I feel that even when i'm fighting for my 'life' in undertale I'm still the fucking bad guy? Neutral is just less-shitty bad guy in this scenario that the developers mapped out. As I said, I see no gray areas at all.

That's your own hot take. I never felt guilty in Neutral run, only reason I actually got a Neutral run is because I killed Toriel and didn't realize deaths were permanent. But I wouldn't call any Neutral run just runoff from Genocide.

tbh DS woudn't really be my first pick as a subtle explorations of your own ethical presence in the world, it feels much more nihilistic and never invites you to ponder on your actions since everything feels and breeds doom from the start. When you hesitated or felt guilty slashing an enemy it is just projection on your part because the game gives you a barren blank canvas upon wich to think (unlike in most games, wich is awesome, but doesn't work the same way as inviting you to ponder directly)

The only characters that truly judge you in Undertale for your actions are Flowey (in a very manipulative fashion wich is deeply connected to his character) and Sans as a true keeper of the moral highground (and he leaves you be in neutral). Other than that even Toriel dun' give a fuck when you swat ladybugs and ghosts.
In a way the biggest judgment when I played kinda came from myself, in the form of "why the fuck would I kill, when I have the possibility to not?" wich is basic common sense in the real world but hasn't quite been explored in such a fun fashion in many games 'xcept for the stealth genre.

Finally and shortly, from a mechanical standpoint the game doesn't manipulate you in the sense that it encourages pacifism, as you end up with a rather shoddy healthbar and a whole campaign is written in for those who wish to spread mayhem (wich is a reward many pacifists shudder to play out even though it means more content)

I still have my faves of this on my rotation lmao.

IIRC it's Undertale, Core, ASGORE, Megalovania, Spider Dance, Hopes and Dreams.

I'm super hesitant to ever do a dirtbag run but I've always wondered what it felt like to throw hands with Sans
