Lyrics can make music worth it. Several of my favorite artists have released spoken pieces with almost nothing in the background and I consider it great "music".
unless the words are sung in melody that is not music

or then anytime anyone spoke with some sort of purpose it would be considered music

I totally agree that lyrics can make music worth it. A lot of my favorite music is based as much around an artist trying to express him or herself through the lyrics as though the instrumentals. In these cases, the music is there to complement and highlight something in the lyrics, not to be enjoyed on its own necessarily.

Well what is music? Spoken pieces often contain a lot more musical qualities than say improvised atonal music (for example clear rhythm pattern). I think the line between spoken word and music is very thin (is a spoken piece with a subtle guitar solo in the background music? if so, what about one chord drone? etc). But call me a fan of audio if you want.

i would say plain spoken word with a rhythm pattern to the structure is just poetry, music lyrics are poetry but not all poetry is music
the line is thin and subjective though and not really worth debating it's all art

Yes, yes it is.

Finally finished listening in full. I had checked Disc 1 plenty of times a long time ago, just now I was able to get around to Disc 2. Man, the album sort of dips in quality in Disc 2, I'm afraid.

this album has always been the case of quality over quantity

Right now I'm torn between a 3.5 and a 4. It's got some really strong highlights in the Floyd catalog (Mother, Another Brick In The Wall, Comfortably Numb, even Young Lust, which is supposed to be a parody but still rules) but consistency's really lacking here as well, especially in Disc 2.

These tracks alone make the album a 4. I also love In the Flesh, Goodbye Blue Sky, Mother, Goodbye Cruel World, The Show Must Go On. But what you say about the consistency on the second disc is very true. But then again, I always regarded the 2nd disc to be completely different from the first one. It's more of a "verbal" statement than a "musical" one, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I guess I was just disappointed since I loved Disc 1 and I felt the second one was really lacking. However, given further listens, I think it's shaping up to be a 4.
