'Some edgelord comments going on'
applying the man's comments in a strange way, mostly out of context - he thought the final 'In Utero' was 'phenomenal' and he chose to listen to it in the future 'out of enjoyment'
sure, 'Nevermind' wasn't punk enough for him but that's his whole deal, that makes sense
I'm more a believer Nirvana were a great pop band on Nevermind (within a rock framework) and a great punk band on In Utero (within a rock framework) - Albini was more focused on punk ethos, always

They were barbed, had something to prove and banded together through a means to create a raucous noise.
They wrote melodies and full on sonic assaults.
Anyone can dress it anyway they wish but the fact remains there hasn’t been anyone near them in 35yrs be it punk, pop, rock or any other tag.

Lol, come on, this is a ridiculous claim. Listen, I'm not attacking your grandmother here. It's just the Nirvana exceptionalism is such a funny thing to see. They were an entirely competent grimy pop rock band (aka grunge), marketed supremely well and had a sheen of mystique attached to them afterwards through some shotgun shells. But this hysteric shit is something else, man.

"Albini was right to call Nirvana "unremarkable" - even his production can't save this from being a middle-of-the-road pop grunge album."
Pretty certain he only made this claim having only heard Nevermind before because of how polished off it was. Once he was working with them in the studio he had a very different outlook on the band and their music.
also yeah there is literally nothing pop about this

'sheen of mystique attached to them afterwards through some shotgun shells'
they had way more mystique BEFORE the shotgun shells...afterwards we realised they were all human, because Grohl became a workaday rocker and professional 'nice guy', Noveselic became nobody, and Cobain became dust.
You seem to be going on some sort of 'the Beatles were bad and shouldn't have been popular' Scaruffi type rampage.

Zak's claim is a bit hyperbolic but it's a bit dismissive to state their legacy is just as a result of Kurt's death.

It could be argued that the mystique was absolutely wiped away when Cobain killed himself.
The handful of people who were there from the outset may even argue that it had gone once Nevermind was released but for those of us who were there from 92-94 and resonated with it there has been nothing else like ‘em. That is fact.
