Umm no but and I don't hear any mars Volta esque stuff on here. Besides even if I did I still enjoy the hell out of this for what it is. I don't have the "why listen to this when I could be listening to this" attitude.

well just did a reality check by searching other reviews on google and every one I saw mentioned they sound like TMV

Thirding the "this doesn't sound like Volta" sentiment, seems like an arbitrary comparison. Also, I agree with Mongi in regards to the "why listen to this when I could be listening to this" idea. If people followed that idea through on a consistent basis they'd have much less music to enjoy.

The first song has some very light traces of TMV and that is about it. If anything there is a Fair to Midland or even old school Styx influence on this album. The slow part in Landmines easily sounds like something the Styx would have done.

What Styx? hell no! You guys are cracking me up. Put Grand Illusion in there and it would stick out like a sore thumb. All I'm
hearing is Mars Volta from the jagged riffs to the absurd lyrics.

Fair enough if you hear them but I just don't hear it. Plus I think the lyrics are really good mostly on here. Especially
salutations.

"well just did a reality check by searching other reviews on google and every one I saw mentioned they sound like TMV"
Which just goes to show that many reviewers are lazy.

Lyrics are super mild in comparison with Volta's. Riff style is also completely different. TMV may be
one of the inspiration but that they sound COMPLETELY like them.. Dude, so untrue
Well since it's so blatant that they totally sound like TMV pick up just one or two tracks from the TMV that
sound like this

Also Landmines is fantastic.

@LunaticSoul I didn't hear any song that sounded like a complete rip-off, it's just their whole style is the same. The challenging melodies, the aggressive high singing, the rhythms, the riffs, etc. If you want examples, they're peppered all over the album. Here's 3 examples. Keep in mind I'm only familiar with the first two TMV. The rhythm and mood of this section of "Dark Charade" sounds like "Cicatriz E.S.P.", which happens to be the middle epic from Deloused: http://youtu.be/Ubn06zXq8GA?t=23m46s
The riff here at about 43 min 19 sec sounds like "Roulette Dares": http://youtu.be/Ubn06zXq8GA?t=43m13s
Take this riffy part from the first song http://youtu.be/Ubn06zXq8GA?t=1m33s and compare it to this in Frances: http://youtu.be/quK6092mesw?t=1h4m11s

Well... I could tell you at least twenty bands that have aggressive high singing, challenging melodies and
rhythms! The first one you have highlighted is a pretty darn good example, but again.. how long does it last
anyway? 30 seconds? It's not like ANY band that does a disco beat bridge is copying volta, christ
LAGWBAT it's a continuous rush of different stuff thrown at you and it's dense of emotional lyrics, amazing
crescendos and a huge, huge variety. That's why this is a superb disc and not 'just' a TMV rip-off. ;)

"It's not like ANY band that does a disco beat bridge is copying volta"
True, but this band is one of them :] While we're on the subject, I'm not even a huge fan of TMV. This is interesting enough, though. I did hear a few other modern prog influences I will refrain from sharing :p Best album of last year, though? Nah.

Any disc I'd put on my top 1000000000000 of any year after 1970 I could discern 5 bands from which they have taken influences from..
E.g. taking a look at your 4.5 lists.. Haken. I mean, first two discs are blatant DT ripoffs, while The Mountain is DT+Gentle Giant+Meshuggah+Redemption+some neo-prog thrown in.
(I love the Mountain, share the 'eh' feeling on TMV)

Not saying you can't enjoy bands that show influences, but it helps to really like the bands they are influenced by. Agreed about Haken, but even if Mountain were simplified to just 50% DT and 50% GG that would still be more diverse than 75% TMV :p Not to mention I like DT and GG lots more than TMV.

Prog rock? Must be a volta ripoff. If not, tool or PT. Cuz, I mean, no one makes anything original. It's all
just ripoffs of those 3 pillars of modern prog rock :P
I remember this same discussion when Fair to Midland dropped their albums.
EDIT: Also, TMV kinda went out with a fart noise with their last two records. This is so much better than
Nocturniquet or Octahedron.

On the bright side, at least we've moved on from the Tool comparisons.

heck no they have one guitar player, one drummer one bass player and the singer is high pitched and a bit of a dick, that's so 90% Tool!
