I know what you mean. I say I like indie rock a lot, but honestly I am just referring the multiple albums put out by the bands I mentioned previously plus some others I can't think of right now.

Yeah, my mates were listening to a lot of this British new-wave Indie stuff, a few American bands were also lumped in but the whole British thing seemed to be a badge of honour to some people. Honestly, I couldn't care less where the music was from. Most of it wasn't very good but you got stuck listening to it by default. And don't get me started on post-Oasis dirge & much later we had a ton of bands trying to copy The Libertines as well. Yuck.
I remember discovering Interpol & they didn't seem that highly regarded amongst my peers despite being vaguely similar (& better) than a lot of the British stuff. It was weird.

Oh Interpol are the gods overall! I was referring to UK bands only haha. Internationally speaking, I would def add Interpol and The Strokes into the mix.

I never got into The Strokes but they're definitely another one on my 'respect' list & I used to dig the odd track.

And I know exactly what you mean. Countless artists that I know are super influential and have made great albums in their respective genres, but they're just not for me. I have a really long list lol.
