My wife's best friend is a hardcore Catholic, or at least she likes to act like she is. (Despite sleeping around all the time and living with her boyfriend for years before they got married, something trve Catholics would never dream of.) Well her and her husband really want to have a child, but unfortunately due to medical reasons, they cannot conceive on their own. They have the resources to try both IVF or just straight up adoption, and she has said multiple times that IVF and adoption go against her Catholic beliefs with respect to having children. So, here's this couple that want so badly to be parents. But are willfully turning down their only legitimate options to do so because...of.....a book?

DKF my point is that every Catholic I've ever known picks and chooses the ideals they want to follow buffet style. No one's perfect but religious people love to be selective about what rules "matter" and which ones apparently don't. This is the same girl who completely cut off and ostracized a lifelong friend when she came out as lesbian; meanwhile she's on birth control getting drilled by her high school boyfriend every night. Never met a Catholic that wasn't a supermassive hypocrite when it was convenient for them.

@tectactoe cherry picking is something every religious person does to a certain degree. I can confirm that hypocrisy is rampant inside catholic circles (I was raised a catholic and as a child I already saw the double standards and bs inside it). That being said I've met very nice catholic people that actually try to live by their beliefs. Problem is even from a theological point of view there are contradictory claims inside their holy books so I just take their sources with a grain of salt. Jesus interrupted is a great book on the bible contradictions and inconsistencies that I always recommend

I myself am a Chistian and yes that may be hard to believe. I follow no "religion" though. Catholics are fucked in all kinds of different ways that I don't have time or patience to get into right now. My faith is all about a personal relationship with God and has no agenda other than that. Might be weird coming from a bm lover such as myself but at the end of the day thats how my personal experience is. And if you're a nonbeliever thats all well and good too. Its all personal feelings and preference tbh.

I have no problems with spiritual christians who follow "Christian values" (I'd argue these values stem from empathy and deep reasoning but...) and have a "relationship with god" on a personal level. In the end they should acknowledge that faith of that type is irrational and therefore completely subjective. I share many values with christians actually, I just think they stem from somewhere else and I skip all the bible bs in the way.
