I gave RTL a heady 2.5 if that's any consolation.

I love how sunlight rating reminds me of when I started listening metallica I used to ignore the period between kill em all and the black album and just focus on the load-st anger period.

I'd hazard a guess that if I don't like classic-era Metallica it's probably best to avoid those later ones.

Screaming was an essential part of metal for the purpose of relaying emotion. Listeners didn't understand the meaning behind the "screaming" they would hear and thus never learned the purpose of the technique as a whole. It's easier to write it off as negatively influencing people rather than provide an actual meaning behind it. The hypocrisy behind those statements is unreal since twerking and break-dancing is artful but screaming is just *so* unforgivable. God forbid anyone scream in a song but swearing and slang terms are a-okay.

'God forbid anyone scream in a song but swearing and slang terms are a-okay.'
Interesting point, although I don't think people consider the meaning behind it, more the fact that hearing screaming in music completely puts them off from an enjoyment perspective, which if that's the case you can't really disagree.
I'm definitely the first to point out pop-music that's guilty of those misdemeanours, there's a lot of crass, shallow & even misogynistic pop (particularly pop-R&B/hip-hop) that just seems to get a free pass simply because it's expected at this point & 'just is'.
Playing devil's advocate I don't think the majority of people who dislike metal truly believe Satanic lyrics are generally created by people who're evil (apart from a handful of notorious examples) so maybe they don't take pop lyrics seriously either. I'd argue the two are very different because one is based on imagery/fantasy & the other usually describes real life situations - I've heard the 'it's not to be taken seriously' argument used a few times re pop lyrics so thought it was worth saying.
This is far too long...

you're probably over-thinking it.
most pop = melodic vocal lines that people remember and sing along to. harsher vocals are generally a lot less melodic and less easy on the ears, especially to people unaccustomed to them. the lyrics themselves probably don't have much influence on people liking/disliking songs whether they're metal or not.

I wasn't analysing why people like pop/don't like metal. It was in response to a comment on the previous page which highlighted screaming vs swearing/slang terms etc. I just elaborated a little.
In fact, read my first paragraph again & tell me I didn't already touch on your point... 'People don't consider the meaning behind it' etc.

Well SunlightCityDrive, your point is valid. However, when discussing Satanic lyrics, most metal singers are portraying caricatures of moral values. Characters like Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, ACDC and Lemmy Kilmister pioneered an alternative lifestyle that rallied against traditional moral beliefs of that era. They don't do anything overtly evil (as they are characters) but rather shocking. Although the lyrical content of their music isn't any worse than your average pop song, their stage presence is what drives the controversy to 11. Iron Maiden, for example, never released anything remotely Satanic in their music. They mostly wrote about subjects like war or native Americans, but the religious overtones in their music made many perceive them as evil.

“You know, dude, I'm fucking sick of this. I am fucking sick of it. I'm sick of the touring. I'm sick of making 400,000 dollars a fucking night. I'm sick of the free drugs, the free booze, the groupies blowing me dawn to fucking dusk every night, I'm in a rut and I want out.”
“We got all those concerts coming up, man.”
“I know, it sucks. Unless... Ian, Nigel, come here. I just had a fucking idea, man. What if, Ian ... Let's just say, what if....now open your mind real wide now. What if we kill the fucking audience? Could I go back to my day job? I could sell shoes again!” - Bill Hicks
