Gonna see them tomorrow. It's going to be a painful drive but I'm sure it will be worth it.

Just saw them live and they were awesome. Played for like 3 hours. Amazing sound. Gavin Harrison is a force

Yeah I caught them live on this tour with my dad. We got into them together when I was a kid and never got a chance to see them back then so this was such a cool full circle experience. Great setlist too.

Came back to the bonus tracks more than anything else here, but "Herd Culling" and "Harridan" are still some of their best since Fear of a Blank Planet.

Finally got round to giving this some serious back to back listening to work out what I thought of it. The main take away from it was that this was better than I thought it was going to be. My main concers were 1) it was just going to sound like a SW solo album, 2) just an unnecassary addition to their discography. On the whole I really enjoyed it, with only a few misgivings. The harsh guitar in Of The New Day just wrecks that song - those moments sound so flat, hollow and misplaced - they really disrupt that song. Dignity is probbaly one of the few songs where I miss the bass of Colin Wilson. Herd Culling on some days sounds like the most grating and annoying song they have ever released. The "liar" vocal really hurts my ears. In general all of the metalesque bits are the weak points. Walk the Plank has really grown on me - very different from the rest of the album, electronic, glitchy, atmospheric - adds a nice other dimension to the album. Remove Of The new Day and Herd Culling and replace with Never Have and Love in the Past Tense.

The verse riff of herd culling is kinda lame innit

Yeah but the bridge section is an album highlight. Much as I like this, I really wish they had a pure ballad or two like Lazarus and Stars Die. But they added dumb heavy guitar chords to Of the New Day for some reason. Rats Return is also pretty unnecessary, but everything else is tops.

This is okay but I don't think it holds a candle to their older stuff. I schleep.

Bridge is good, but the first 1-2 minutes are wack

Definitely one of the lesser PT albums, but even lower-tier PT is still quite good
|

first time listening to this as someone who used to be a die-hard PT fan
I like the sparseness of the sound. Even with the heavier parts, this feels closer to the Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun era and I'm here for it
also I always thought the album cover looked a bit random until today I realized it's supposed to be a tree that is spiky like a porcupine... or is it?
