"speaking of context, why did AIC, Soundgarden and pearl jam not seem to create half the hysteria that these guys did?" Because like Eminem and Sex Pistols they ironically became pop when it wasn't their total intention of doing so. Also everyone went apeshit over Kurt's death

like why do we not worship positive music like the beatles in this current timeframe you know, its like to talk about nevermind you have to not talk about nevermind because its just so fucking influential as said by thousands and thousands of artists, pundits, people, and it doesnt matter what you personally think at the end of the day, because there is a tide thats taken its own force that you need to recognize instead of your own if you want to have a proper understanding of art and music

"and it doesnt matter what you personally think at the end of the day"

This is dangerous thinking. Thinking like this is how to teach people how to think (for the sake of the collective) and I doubt Kurt would approve of your point here.

to me a classic is just an album that i've listened to around 25+ times and love every minute of, I hardly factor in context, originality, historical impact etc plus naturally If that were the case most the userbase would have the exact same 5's. Everyone has different predilections to genres that seem to be almost innate - I've loved rock/metal since I heard children of bodom at age 9 and can't really explain why, but thats the beauty of music. So yeah moral of the story never shit on anyones 5's, unless they're some horseshit like U2 or Ween ofcourse

The whole point of art is that it IS all about how the individual is personally affected and if someone "doesn't get it" it's not only their prerogative to not love it, but also the duty of the opposition to realize that this is okay.

Does no one 'feel' the magic though? Honestly I can jam Doors, Hendrix, Stones, Who, Pistols etc and there really is a tangible electricity. Nirvana has it but it's amplified a bit cos I lived it.

tldr this album has been heard by everybody, and that is all it needs to justify itself

the point of art =/= effect of art

"the point of art =/= effect of art"

Then the effect of art is irrelevant to personal opinion

the passion has just gone from the music in the past 20-25 years and that is perhaps the biggest reason there will never be another nirvana or cobain
that 'electricity' zak speaks of isnt there to lend a hand to passable or even exemplary artists and records and so you are left mostly with pale imitations

I think the only loss of passion that has gone is in charting pop music, so it's unfair to talk about music as a whole like that

no, personal opinion should, at least with an album of this size, be determined after considering the point and the effect as unrelated to each other but vital in their own respective rights to having an understanding of the work

it's only unfair if i'm presenting it as an objective statement that everyone has to swallow
i listen to plenty of modern music but most of it doesn't sound too much like the classics so it doesn't come across so stale and flaccid

"The Belltower were a band lumped into the British shoegazing scene of the early 1990s, despite the fact that they were American"

Leading up to be the worst thing of all time. I'd just like the say spooky is, was and always will be the greatest thing ever alive or dead.

I don't listen to enough modern music (let alone what's "culturally impactful" or whatever)

But idk The Knife - Shaking the Habtual (2013) I guess
