definitely think I'm going to 4 this.......it really is an excellent album and probably the most cohesive since DuVall joined the band

black gives way to blue is the last one i proper liked, it felt like the "goodbye" to Staley and was very heartfelt. i havent felt the same darkness with anything past that.

this and the last one felt very... hollow, comparative to the Layne era.

tbh this is the same feeling i had when I got to Heritage in Opeths discog. I was hoping it'd be like Damnation but it was nowhere near as depressing.
i will say however, that i came around to Hesitation Marks from NIN, so maybe I can appreciate this later stuff in that vein.

i listen to the two different era's with very different expectations as if they were two different bands (which they technically are)......i will never enjoy the current era as much as I enjoyed layne's back in the 90's and early 00's.....but again, i listen to them from two different angles

That's fair. It's kinda hard for me to separate stuff like that at times. Prog rock opeth is basically a new sound compared to their prog death years but even during those years they wrote a prog rock album that's one of my top 50 albums ever in Damnation so I was going in hoping for something I could somewhat tie to that. And this kinda has a more hollow feeling which is fine I guess but not sure how much I'll enjoy it atm

"this is creeping up as my favorite out of the last 3"
I doubt this could ever supplant BGWTB for me since I absolutely love that and some days it's my favourite album by them. But I've been meaning to devote some time to this again and see if it hits any different.

I understand about BGWTB, but it’s becoming my least favorite DuVall as I continue to listen to them
