Who's Jason Aldean

Album Rating: 4.5
He's a country singer who apparently falls under the bro-country umbrella, don't know much else about him other than that he has a few big hits under his belt ("Dirt Road Anthem," "Take a Little Ride," and "Burnin' It Down" being the highest charters)

I'm pretty sure Jason Aldean is pretty deplorable.

I am too but worse comes to worst, his album boosts my objectivity ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Plus sometimes an abysmal album helps you appreciate quality music more
Double Dare (completely unrelated genre, I know) makes almost any other music sound better for instance

I do need to listen to more awful music.

Double Dare (by Waterparks) is a terrible album, if you want to start there. I don't mind pop punk every once in a while, but that album embodies everything that could go wrong in that genre.
Last year's Allison Weiss and Vulfpeck records are also quite bad, but somewhat more approachable

Back to this album. Opener is an absolute thing of beauty and the switch to horn-based instrumentation is pulled off seamlessly

Second listen complete... bumped to 4.5
So much emotion, energy and compositional variety on display here

:-D
This is really more of a strong 4.5 but this year has been too good to not have a full-on classic so I've given this the bump for now, hopefully it holds for me.
Metamodern Sounds In Country Music is nearly as good too. Two AOTYs two albums in a row. What an artist.

I know I just said earlier that I was planning on listening to almost exclusively 2016 stuff for the remainder of the year but I might have to make an exception for Metamodern. I can see this approaching that 5 given time.
Agreed that this year has been great, I got a 5 early on (Blackstar) and now all of a sudden in the space of a week I have two potential future 5s in the pipeline (this and Niechec). Unreal.

Definitely give Metamodern a try dude. It's a bit more straight-up country than this for the most part (think more in the style of "Sea Stories"), though there's still a lot of interesting stuff going on. The lyrics on that one are particularly amazing, more philosophical and metaphysical compared to the personal nature of the lyrics here.

I'm away at my grandmother's apartment for the next few days but everyone's pretty chill over here so I'll probably be able to fit it in. If it's even half as good as this I'll dig it.
Also, ayyyy the average went up!

Sturgill's going to play on SNL tomorrow night, I'm hoping he does a good job. He's incredible live though so I probably shouldn't be worried.
It's great to see him getting so much attention, though I doubt he'll ever fully cross over into the mainstream.
